MONV.MitsuMame・Omoya, a folk craft gallery and cafe in Nijo, Kyoto (Operated by: MITSUMAME・Omoya Co., Ltd., Curated by: Mingei Bijutsu Club MONV. Mitsumame・Omoya Kyoto Suzaku, Headquarters: Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City), will hold a summer special exhibition themed around handicrafts that complement daily life from Saturday, July 11, 2026, to Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The exhibition will be held in two phases. The first phase will feature a space where Mashiko ware from Shiretokogama and wood lacquerware and plant-dyed works by Gentta, Kaori, and Kanon Hayashi resonate together.
The second phase will introduce cool and refreshing "blue vessels" by Shinichi Inoue of Tochian.
This is an event where you can experience the beauty inherent in everyday items and the warmth of handmade crafts in a special space that integrates folk craft vessels, a wooden interior, a cafe, and a garden.
Kyoto, Nijo to Host Two-Phase Summer Exhibition of Handicrafts
The first phase will simultaneously feature the Mashiko Ware Exhibition by the father-and-son duo Tsuyoshi and Keiichi Honda of Shiretokogama, and the "Gifts from the Earth" exhibition of wood lacquerware, lacquer accessories, and plant-dyed works by the Hayashi family: Gentta, Kaori, and Kanon (from Saturday, July 11 to Sunday, August 8).
The second phase will be the "Blue Vessels" exhibition by Shinichi Inoue of Tochian (from Tuesday, August 18 to Sunday, August 30).
Vessels of clay, works of wood and lacquer, and soft colors brought by plants.
This summer exhibition showcases works born from different materials, designed to harmonize with daily life, whether it's for dining, tea time, or arranging flowers. In the space in Nijo, Kyoto, where folk craft vessels, a wooden environment, a cafe, and a garden are integrated, you can feel the warmth of handmade crafts and the beauty that exists in everyday life.
An example of coordination that adds the warmth of folk art to the daily dining table. Mashiko ware by Shiretokogama, Tsuyoshi and Keiichi Honda (father and son), Tochian by Shinichi Inoue, and wood lacquerware by Gentta Hayashi.
The Significance of Reintroducing Handicrafts in Kyoto Today
Kyoto has long been a land where the beauty of crafts and daily life coexist.
Mashiko ware, on the other hand, has been nurtured by earth, fire, and human hands as vessels that complement the daily dining table.
It's not about competing for mere splendor, but about finding beauty in things used every day.
It is about accompanying the user's life, receiving food, and becoming familiar with the hands over time.
This deeply resonates with the "beauty in daily life" that folk craft cherishes.
At Mingei Bijutsu Club MONV. Mitsumame・Omoya Kyoto Suzaku, by introducing handicrafts made from different materials such as wood lacquerware and plant dyeing alongside Mashiko ware, we hope to provide a more three-dimensional understanding of how the "beauty of use" breathes in daily life.
Phase 1: Shiretokogama Tsuyoshi & Keiichi Honda Parent-Child Exhibition
Phase 1 (Saturday, July 11 - Sunday, August 8) will feature Mashiko ware by the father-and-son duo Tsuyoshi and Keiichi Honda of Shiretokogama.
The vessels from Shiretokogama possess the simple charm of Mashiko clay and a quiet strength. Their appeal lies in their soft shapes that utilize the texture of the clay, their unadorned harmony, and their ease of use that naturally blends into daily life.
Each piece, from rice bowls, plates, and bowls to teacups, mugs, sake cups, and flower vases, embodies a beauty for daily use. In particular, the striking colors of white, black, and deep navy quietly enhance the beauty of food and flowers without overpowering them.
The weight when held, the space when served, the presence when placed on the table.
Shiretokogama's vessels are not complete just by looking at them; their value deepens with use.

Simultaneous Exhibition: Gentta, Kaori, Kanon Hayashi Parent-Child Exhibition "Gifts from the Earth"
Running concurrently with the Shiretokogama exhibition is the "Gifts from the Earth" exhibition by the Hayashi family: Gentta, Kaori, and Kanon (until Saturday, August 8).
This exhibition features wood lacquerware by Gentta Hayashi, lacquer accessories by Kaori Hayashi, and plant-dyed works by Kanon Hayashi. It is an exhibition themed around a gentle and quiet life landscape woven by wood, lacquer, and plants.
The warm colors of red and black, the warmth of wood grain, and the soft overlapping colors of plant dyeing naturally resonate with the world of ceramics. By displaying the warmth of Mashiko ware's clay, the lustrous presence of wood lacquerware, and the gentle expressions of plant dyeing in the same space, the beauty in daily life emerges beyond the differences in materials.
Using vessels.
Wearing accessories.
Decorating a room.
Gently accompanying daily life.
"Gifts from the Earth" is an exhibition that makes one cherish these very activities. By viewing it alongside Shiretokogama's Mashiko ware, you can gain a deeper appreciation for the charm of each material—earth, wood, lacquer, plants—and the richness that handmade crafts bring to life.

Phase 2: Shinichi Inoue of Tochian Exhibition
Phase 2 (Tuesday, August 18 - Sunday, August 30) will feature vessels from Tochian by Shinichi Inoue, who was born and raised in Mashiko.
While cherishing the inherent warmth of Mashiko ware, Mr. Inoue has pursued the distinctive expression of "blue vessels." The deep blues, colors reminiscent of clear water, and the rich expressions born from firing bring a quiet color to the summer dining table.
Furthermore, Mr. Inoue's vessels are designed not only for beauty but also for ease of use and gentle shapes. A selection of vessels, including rice bowls, plates, bowls, mugs, and flower vases, are naturally suited for daily use, and one can feel a free-spirited creativity that goes beyond tradition.
Following the exhibition in Phase 1, which harmonizes earth, wood, lacquer, and plants, Phase 2 introduces another facet of Mashiko ware's charm through the world of refreshing blue vessels.

What MONV.MitsuMame・Omoya Can Offer
MONV.MitsuMame・Omoya is a place where folk craft vessels, a wooden environment, a cafe, and a garden with a small path are integrated. It's not just about viewing works on shelves; the unique charm of this place is that you can imagine "how to use them in daily life" while layering them with cafe experiences and dining scenes.
Mashiko ware is not just for display; it is a vessel that grows with the user's life.
Wood lacquerware and plant-dyed fabrics also deepen in charm through use, wear, and the passage of time.
Morning rice, cool summer noodles, an evening drink, a moment to arrange a single flower.
In such small everyday moments, the warmth of the earth, the luster of wood and lacquer, and the gentle colors of plants can be companions.
We hope that through this exhibition, you will experience such "beauty in daily life" in the space of Nijo, Kyoto.
