Legalscape Inc. (Headquarters: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Juri Yagita; hereinafter "Legalscape") announced that one in three lawyers belonging to the Tokyo Bar Associations (Tokyo Bar Association, First Tokyo Bar Association, Second Tokyo Bar Association) are now using its legal research platform "Legalscape." Approximately five years after launching the service in June 2021, Legalscape has become deeply embedded in the daily practice of Tokyo-based lawyers, establishing itself as essential infrastructure in the legal research industry.

Background: Inefficient Legal Research Has Long Been a Challenge in Legal Practice

Legal research—searching statutes, case law, and legal literature—is a fundamental task in legal practice. From large law firms handling international transactions, M&A, and intellectual property, to solo practitioners managing local, civil, and family law cases, demand for sophisticated, cross-disciplinary legal research remains high. However, the need to consult multiple databases and printed materials has long been a significant burden and persistent challenge in legal work.

To address this issue, Legalscape launched its AI-powered legal research platform "Legalscape" in June 2021, creating a unified environment for searching and accessing statutes, case law, books, and guidelines. In September 2023, the company became the first in Japan to introduce an AI research feature combining generative AI with its proprietary natural language processing technology. (※2)

Usage Details: Widespread Adoption Across Firms of All Sizes, from Major to Solo Practices

Currently, one in three lawyers belonging to the Tokyo Bar Association, First Tokyo Bar Association, and Second Tokyo Bar Association uses "Legalscape." Tokyo is home to approximately half of Japan’s lawyers and hosts all of the country’s five largest law firms. The platform’s widespread adoption across large, mid-sized, and local solo practices—regardless of size or specialization—demonstrates broad recognition of its practical value.

Key factors driving adoption include:

Industry-leading (※3) content volume: Over 4,500 legal books, case law, statutes, and guidelines—the largest collection in the industry.

AI Research Function: Combines generative AI with proprietary natural language processing to instantly summarize and present relevant research findings.

Cross-source unified search: Enables cross-database searches across statutes, case law, books, and guidelines within a single platform, with one-click navigation to source materials.

Future Initiatives: Expanding Beyond Lawyers to Serve Broader Legal Professionals

Legalscape will continue expanding its service to a wider range of legal professionals—including corporate legal staff, judicial scriveners, and social insurance labor consultants—while further enhancing its AI research capabilities. The platform is already being adopted in major cities including Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka, in addition to Tokyo.

Looking ahead, Legalscape aims to build an environment that enables legal professionals across Japan—including in regional cities—to seamlessly access legal information.
