Medical Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture; President and CEO: Kuniō Kasazaki; hereinafter “MEI”) announced that the scale of secondary-use data derived from electronic medical records (EMRs) it provides has exceeded 6 million patients. Since announcing the milestone of 5 million in March 2026, collaborations with medical institutions have continued to expand smoothly, adding another 1 million patients’ worth of data.
Since concluding a capital and business alliance agreement with KDDI Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hiroji Matsuda; hereinafter “KDDI”) in 2023, MEI has jointly built medical data platforms with over 80 medical institutions nationwide, working to accumulate and analyze EMR-derived data. By the end of fiscal 2026, MEI aims to enable the use of EMR-derived data for approximately 10 million patients.
MEI RWD Overview
MEI provides medical big data and analysis services by combining EMR-derived medical big data accumulated in collaboration with medical institutions with the insights and analytical technologies of MEI and KDDI. These services have been adopted by multiple pharmaceutical companies and national projects related to medical data.
Main features of MEI RWD:
① EMR-derived data with measurable outcomes
With the support of over 80 medical institutions, primarily core hospitals, MEI comprehensively collects EMR-derived data based on actual clinical practice.
Leveraging the expertise of the medical DWH system “CLISTA!”, MEI accumulates a wide range of data, including EMRs and medical affairs systems scattered within medical institutions.
Detailed data such as test results, prescriptions, and procedures can be tracked over time, useful for verifying drug efficacy and evaluating appropriate use.
② Data reflecting the latest clinical practices within one month
Each medical institution is connected online, enabling provision of data from approximately one month ago.
Timely access to the latest clinical data supports research by pharmaceutical companies and academia.
③ High analytical power combining medicine and data science
With experienced physicians and data scientists on staff, MEI provides multi-faceted analysis that deeply understands customer challenges, offering a consultative approach to problem-solving.
Support includes evidence generation from RWD, protocol design under development, patient journey understanding, and rapid grasp of market changes after product launch.
