Movie "Maku ga Agaru" INTRODUCTION
A new youth film for all generations.
What scenery did the girls see beyond their struggles and challenges?
The original work is the debut novel "Maku ga Agaru," published in 2012 by Oriza Hirata, a world-renowned Japanese playwright. The script was written by Kohei Kiyasu, who was highly praised for "The Kirishima Thing." Taking the helm as director was Katsuyuki Motohiro of the "Bayside Shakedown" series. Director Motohiro, who has shown his skill in monster series while also having a deep affection for theater, has created a moving piece where the play-within-a-play scenes and the world of high school drama are deeply touching.
The main cast of drama club members was chosen through a search for the best cast with the desire to have them played by "the most shining girls of the moment," resulting in the major casting of the five members of Momoiro Clover Z. They undertook a workshop with Oriza Hirata to learn the basics of acting before tackling the film set. The leader, Kanako Momota, plays Saori, the thoughtful and perceptive but reserved club president who struggles to speak her mind. Shiori Tamai plays Yukko, the poster actress with a natural princess-like charm. Reni Takagi plays Garuru, the unpredictable and free-spirited comic relief character. Momoka Ariyasu plays Nakanishi, a stoic and talented transfer student from a top school. The youngest member, Ayaka Sasaki, plays Akemi, the most dependable member and mood-maker despite being an underclassman. Director Motohiro, who knew the five's personalities and relationships inside out, reflected these in their roles to create lively, life-sized characters. The supporting cast includes Haru Kuroki, who won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival for "The Little House," the in-demand Muro Tsuyoshi, who handles everything from serious to comedy, and veterans like Kotaro Shiga and Michiko Shimizu, all of whom are unique talents.
STORY
Saori Takahashi (Kanako Momota), a second-year student at the prefectural Fujigaoka High School in a regional city, is about to begin her final year in the drama club, which she leads. While practicing with her uniquely individual club members for the annual tournament with the goal of breaking through the district competition, a new teacher, Ms. Yoshioka (Haru Kuroki), who is said to be a former queen of student theater, is appointed. Under Yoshioka's guidance, their days of dedicating themselves to theater with the aim of reaching the national tournament begin.
