ELEMINIST Survey Overview on Relocation and Dual-Base Living
Survey Period: April 30, 2026 – May 31, 2026
Survey Target: 127 ELEMINIST Followers (men and women aged 20s to 60s)
*Percentages may not total exactly 100% due to rounding to the nearest whole number.
85.0% are interested in "relocation or dual-base living"
First, respondents were asked, "Are you interested in relocating to rural areas or living a dual-base lifestyle?"
"Very interested" was the most common response at 55.1%, followed by "somewhat interested" at 29.9%, resulting in 85.0% expressing interest in rural relocation or dual-base living. Additionally, 7.9% reported that they are already living such a lifestyle.
Top reason: "Want to live close to nature" (69.2%)
Respondents who answered "interested" were further asked to explain why.
The most common reason was "want to live close to nature" (69.2%), followed by "want to improve the quality of food and daily life" (59.0%) and "want to live sustainably" (57.3%). Many also cited "wanting a new way of working" or "feeling stressed by city life."
Ideal lifestyles: "Sustainable energy and food" and "living surrounded by nature"
What kind of lifestyle do people consider ideal?
The top two responses were "a lifestyle with sustainable energy and food" (75.6%) and "living surrounded by nature" (72.4%). Other popular choices included "shuttling between urban and rural areas" and "self-sufficient living."
71.7% interested in a dual-base lifestyle
Next, respondents were asked which option they were more interested in: rural relocation or dual-base living.
"Dual-base living" was overwhelmingly popular, with 71.7% selecting it. In contrast, 24.4% expressed interest in "rural relocation." This shows that while dual-base living is significantly more popular, both options attract substantial interest.
Top priorities: natural environment, transportation access, and work; popular regions include Nagano, Shonan, and Okinawa
When considering specific regions for relocation or dual-base living, what factors are most important?
"Natural environment" was the top priority at 76.4%, followed by "transportation access" (59.1%), "work/income" (54.3%), and "daily life infrastructure" (53.5%). While practical concerns like accessibility, job availability, and infrastructure were important, the high emphasis on natural environment stands out.

Most desired information: daily life conditions, government support, and relationships with locals
When considering relocation or dual-base living, what information do people want to know?
Respondents most wanted to know about "actual daily life," "government support programs," and "relationships with local residents"—options that directly address the concerns mentioned earlier.
Many dream of "living close to nature" or "dual-base living"
Finally, open-ended responses revealed common sentiments:
"I want to live surrounded by nature!"
"I want to enjoy wide-open skies and feel the breeze on a veranda. Even without special events, just being with family brings contentment. I value mental spaciousness (white space)." (20s, female)
"I want to create a compost area and a small garden in my yard to live a circular lifestyle." (40s, female)
"I want to wake up, ride my bike to the sea, relax without watching the clock, watch the sunset, eat delicious fish, and enjoy drinks with locals while listening to music. Experiencing weekends like this would enrich my life." (20s, female)
"I want to live where the air is clean, there's plenty of greenery, and I can see stars at night. I'd like to grow vegetables and fruit to eat healthy food." (50s, female)
"Dual-base living is ideal"
"City life feels overwhelming with crowds, information overload, and constant rushing. I dream of living close to nature. However, since I mostly need to work in the city, I'm considering a dual-base lifestyle in an easily accessible location." (20s, female)
"In rural areas, I want to focus on myself and value my time. I hope to maintain a balanced lifestyle—recharging in nature and gaining inspiration in the city to achieve a good balance of input and output." (30s, female)
"Due to work, completely leaving Tokyo isn't realistic yet, but I'd positively consider a lifestyle that allows me to commute between two bases. On the other hand, since my children are still young, I'm concerned about whether we can maintain a stable life and adapt well to both environments. Amid many practical challenges, I'd like to consider what kind of arrangement would work smoothly." (30s, female)
"I don't have any dissatisfaction with living in Tokyo, but I do get a bit bored sometimes. Ideally, I'd like the freedom to choose where to live more casually—live in Tokyo during months with many concerts and events, and live in rural areas during months when I want a relaxed pace." (50s, female)
"Composting and making things require a certain amount of space, which is hard to achieve in a city. But I also want to demonstrate and share sustainable urban living, so I'd like to have an experimental urban base." (40s, female)
Concerns about relocation and dual-base living
"The biggest worry is the double cost of rent and living expenses, plus transportation and other expenses. I'd like to know how people currently manage financially with dual-base living." (20s, female)
"I'd like to know what kind of people consider this, and what triggers their decision." (50s, female)
"I'm concerned about whether I can fit into the local community." (40s, male)
"Work, medical infrastructure, and children's education environment." (40s, female)
Voices from those who have actually relocated
"Before relocating, I was anxious about fitting in and whether I could get my child into daycare. But since moving, my mental satisfaction has increased compared to city life, and my living costs have decreased significantly. I'm confident I made the right choice. I'm looking forward to enjoying home gardening even more." (30s, female)
"I've actually started dual-base living. I live in the central area of the city where my husband's family home is, while renting a house in a mountainous area and preparing farmland. Having multiple bases brings a sense of security. The richness of life here seems unbelievable compared to city financial sensibilities." (40s, female)
"My biggest concern is money. I'm currently trying out dual-base living, but I'm struggling with transportation costs and how to develop my work across two locations..." (30s, female)
"When actually starting dual-base living, I've noticed many institutional delays—especially with financial matters requiring in-person verification by mail, resulting in missed deliveries. Since I can only register my official residence at one location for now, there are many operational challenges and inconveniences." (50s, male)
This survey revealed that many people are considering rural relocation or dual-base living due to rising energy prices, natural disasters, and child-rearing. At the same time, many still have concerns about living costs, finding housing, and integrating into local communities.
With the spread of remote work and AI, options like relocation and dual-base living are likely to become increasingly accessible. The insights shared here may serve as valuable references for those considering such lifestyles.
