This year marks Kururi’s 30th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of Kyoto Onpaku.

As we approach this milestone year, let’s reflect on the 20-year journey of 'Onpaku'.

20 Years Walking with Kyoto’s Autumn — The Legacy of Kyoto Onpaku

Kyoto Onpaku began in 2007 in Kururi’s hometown of Kyoto, with the vision of advancing music within a city of art and culture. Since then, the vast lawn of Miyakoji Park has served as a stage where diverse artists from Japan and abroad perform across genres and generations. For 20 years, it has been carefully nurtured as a unique space that transcends typical rock festivals, fostering warm connections with the local community.

In 2020 and 2021, the event was held as livestreams due to the pandemic, but the music never stopped. Since 2022, the cheers of live audiences have once again filled Miyakoji Park. The flame of music, passed on through challenges, will continue to illuminate Kyoto’s autumn in 2026 as it marks its 20th anniversary.

Connecting Environment, Culture, and Music in a 'Kururi' Cycle — 20 Years of Sustainable Progress

From its inception, Kyoto Onpaku has pursued environmental initiatives as a core pillar. Today, it promotes the 'Shigen ga Kururi Project,' inviting attendees to co-create a sustainable festival model befitting Kyoto, a city of culture. Under this project, various environmental conservation efforts are implemented during the event.

In the food area, composting stations convert food waste and kitchen scraps into fertilizer, contributing to organic waste reduction and recycling.

Other initiatives include reducing plastic use through bamboo tableware and maintaining the park’s lawn using donations collected via crowdfunding. Even after 20 years, environmental stewardship remains deeply embedded in the event’s foundation.

Achievements Made Possible Through Crowdfunding

Kyoto Onpaku’s environmental efforts are supported by the understanding and contributions of its fans.

The crowdfunding campaign, launched in 2018, has grown in support each year, exceeding its 4 million yen target for three consecutive years. The funds raised are used to maintain the lawn at Miyakoji Park—the festival’s venue—and to operate composting systems that turn food waste into fertilizer.

The compost system, introduced in 2022, successfully converted approximately 320kg of food waste collected on-site in 2024 into about 1,200L of mature compost over four months. This compost was used in park flower beds through the Kyoto City Greening Association.

In 2023, herbs grown using this compost were distributed at the venue, demonstrating how the 'Kururi' cycle of resources is becoming increasingly rooted in Kyoto’s community.

Music connects people, and their goodwill returns as greenery to the city. This joyful, future-oriented experience is the value Kyoto Onpaku has cultivated over 20 years—and the reason it continues to be loved by so many fans.

Kururi’s 30th Anniversary — Coloring Kyoto’s Autumn with Gratitude

Kururi, the rock band that has pursued their own sound without following trends, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Meanwhile, 'Kyoto Onpaku,' now an essential autumn music festival in Kyoto, marks its 20th anniversary. In 2026, as these two milestones converge, rich and beautiful melodies will once again vividly color Kyoto’s autumn.

With gratitude for the past 20 years, and stepping forward into a new chapter, 'Kyoto Onpaku 2026' will be held over two days—October 10 (Sat) and 11 (Sun)—at the Lawn Area of Kyoto Miyakoji Park.
