Cross Marketing Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Miki Igarashi) conducted a "Survey on Sleep (2026)" targeting 3,000 men and women aged 20 to 69 residing in all 47 prefectures nationwide. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare published the revised "Sleep Guide for Health Promotion 2023" in 2024. It recommends a standard of "6 hours or more of sleep" for adults, advising people to secure sufficient sleep routinely in both quality and quantity to maintain physical and mental health and improve quality of life. This time, as a factual report, we analyzed the current and ideal sleep times, detailed sleep conditions, sleep-related troubles, worries that disturb sleep, and what people usually wear to bed. ■ Survey Results [Current and Ideal Sleep Time] The current average sleep time, combining weekdays and holidays, is 6.4 hours, with 34% sleeping "about 6 hours" and 29% sleeping "about 7 hours," which is slightly longer than last year. The ideal sleep time remains unchanged from last year at an average of 7.4 hours, with 35% desiring "about 7 hours" and 39% desiring "about 8 hours." The gap between current and ideal sleep time is 1.0 hour, a difference that has not changed from the roughly 1-hour gap seen since 2023. [Sleep Conditions and Troubles] Regarding the details of sleep conditions, while some people have favorable sleep such as "regular sleep timing" (63%) and "good sleep onset" (57%), a larger proportion experiences poor conditions: "feeling sleepy during the day" (65%), "unable to relieve fatigue" (59%), and "shallow sleep" (57%).
Looking at poor sleep conditions by age group, "feeling sleepy during the day" is common among those in their 30s-50s, "unable to relieve fatigue" in their 30s-40s, and "shallow sleep" in their 50s. The trend of "feeling sleepy during the day" has been continuously increasing since 2022 among those in their 30s and 40s. The top 3 sleep-related physical troubles are "snoring," "coldness in limbs/body / numbness in limbs," and "teeth grinding." "Snoring" is a common issue for men in their 50s-60s, "coldness in limbs/body / numbness in limbs" for women in their 40s-60s, and "teeth grinding" for women in their 20s-50s.
For those who cannot sleep due to worries, the top 3 worries disrupting sleep are "money/income/savings," "school or work," and "human relationships." Women have a higher percentage of worrying about "money/income/savings" and "human relationships," while men have a higher percentage for "school or work."
[What People Wear to Bed] What people usually wear to bed includes "room wear such as sweatshirts and T-shirts" (51%) and "pajamas/nightwear" (39%). Only those in their 60s predominantly wear "pajamas/nightwear." "Recovery wear," which became a hot topic in 2025, remains at only 4%.
