The National Association of Empty House Advisors (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Tsuneyoshi Nakamura) announced the launch of a nationwide housing education promotion initiative with the aim of "promoting the creation of sustainable society and communities."
As the first step in this endeavor, the Association for the Promotion of Housing Education will release "Nurturing Lifestyles: Housing Education Connecting Families and the Future," authored by Kominkartist Yukio Kawakami, on July 7, 2026.
Released July 7, 2026: "Nurturing Lifestyles: Housing Education Connecting Families and the Future"
Furthermore, at the National Convention to be held on June 30, 2026, the housing education promotion policy will be formally announced, and housing education courses and events are scheduled to be rolled out sequentially across the country starting from "Housing Education Month" in October.
Why "Housing Education" Now?
We learn many things in school.
However, we have very few opportunities to systematically learn about "housing," which is one of the most expensive purchases in life.
In recent years, issues related to housing have become increasingly complex, including:
・ The increase in vacant homes ・ Soaring housing prices and construction material costs ・ Preparation for large-scale disasters
・ Inheritance issues ・ Expansion of dual-residence and multi-location living
Against this backdrop, the importance of "housing education," which considers housing not just as a building but in the context of lifestyle, community, and family relationships, is growing.
Housing Education is Already Underway Nationwide
Housing education is not a new concept.
In Kyoto City, housing education using traditional Kyoto townhouses as teaching materials is conducted through the "Kyo Sumai no Joho Hiroba" (Kyoto Housing Information Plaza), and in Tokyo, housing education is promoted and supported through "TOKYO Sumai to," and in Kobe City through "Sumairu Net."
Additionally, the housing and living sector is positioned in the curriculum guidelines for home economics in elementary, junior high, and high schools, with content covering:
・ Family life and living spaces ・ Basic functions of dwellings
・ Prevention of household accidents ・ Safe and comfortable living environments
Furthermore, housing education guidelines that support cross-curricular learning have been developed, and housing education is gaining attention as a new area of life education, following "food education."
A Common Language for the Era of Related Population and Dual Residence
The government is promoting the creation of related populations and dual residence through measures such as the 16th Comprehensive Local Decentralization Law and the Hometown Resident Registration System.
As more people move to rural areas, get involved in local communities, or live in multiple locations, the ability to understand the local housing culture and the value of residences, and to choose a lifestyle that suits them, is becoming essential.
When both those moving in and those receiving them learn about housing, their relationship with the community becomes richer.
The National Association of Empty House Advisors positions housing education as a common language that forms the foundation of community development.
Promoting Housing Education Utilizing a Nationwide Network
Housing education seminars for children, etc. Study sessions for those considering building a house
The National Association of Empty House Advisors has been working to solve vacant housing issues and revitalize communities through approximately 103 branches nationwide (as of June 2026).
Moving forward, this network will be utilized to:
・ Conduct housing education seminars ・ Hold housing study sessions for parents and children ・ Organize tours of vacant and traditional houses
・ Host local housing culture experience events
・ Engage in collaborative projects with schools and local governments
These activities are planned to be rolled out in various locations across the country.
Starting with Housing Education Month in October, housing education activities will be sequentially launched in all 47 prefectures, promoting human resource development and community building through housing.
A Book Born as a Symbol of Housing Education Promotion
The book "Nurturing Lifestyles: Housing Education Connecting Families and the Future," to be released this time, will also be used as a textbook for the nationwide housing education activities.
This book clearly explains the essence of housing and lifestyle through four themes:
"Housing is the vessel for a family" "Houses that won't become vacant" "What old houses can teach us" "Hints for a comfortable home"

Author's Message
From HOUSE to HOME
There is "HOUSE" and "HOME" in housing.
While learning about buildings is important, what is even more important is the lifestyle that is nurtured within it.
I hope this book will serve as an opportunity to consider the housing that is truly important for oneself and one's family.
