Oshin Dream Inc. (Headquarters: Taito-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Kazuko Sato), operator of Oshin Drone School—a drone training institution registered with Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism—will host the 'Summer Student Drone Camp 2026' on Izu Oshima Island. Targeted at high school, university, and vocational students, this program enables participants to obtain the national qualification 'Class 2 Unmanned Aircraft Pilot' in just two nights and three days. The camp will be held in five sessions (each limited to 8 participants) between July 27 and September 16, 2026.

This camp is more than just a certification course. In today’s society, where comprehensive selection methods and inquiry-based learning are expanding and young people seek experiences they can express in their own words, opportunities for authentic experiences are increasingly polarized. This program proposes a new model of learning by combining a national qualification linked to a growing industry, immersive experiences in nature on an island, and the creation of friendships across generations and schools.

Background: Why 'Students × National Drone License' Now?

1. Gaining Access to a Growing Industry Before Entering Society

The domestic market size for drone business is projected to more than double over the next six years, reaching a scale of 1 trillion yen by 2030 (Impress General Research Institute, 'Drone Business Survey Report 2025'). Logistics 'last-mile' delivery, infrastructure inspections of bridges and tunnels, disaster search and rescue, smart agriculture, and drone shows for entertainment—all are fields directly addressing Japan’s societal challenges such as labor shortages and safety management.

The national qualification 'Unmanned Aircraft Pilot,' certifying the pilot's skills, was established in December 2022. Furthermore, by December 2025, preferential treatment for flight applications based on private certifications will end, making the possession of a national qualification decisive for credibility in the field. By the time today’s students enter the workforce, the skies will be even busier. The social significance of this camp lies in enabling students to gain access to this opportunity before choosing their career paths.

2. Responding to Educational Trends That Value 'Narratable Achievements'

With the expansion of comprehensive selection and school-recommended admissions in university entrance exams, and the mandatory implementation of inquiry-based learning in high schools, job interviews increasingly ask about 'what students focused on during their academic life (gakuchika).' However, opportunities for such challenges are still not equally accessible to all students.

The Class 2 Unmanned Aircraft Pilot license is an official, photo-bearing qualification issued by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and can be directly listed on resumes. Few students in the same age group hold this qualification, allowing participants to articulate in interviews or application essays why they chose to pursue it. The camp thus provides a space where students can enjoyably build both 'initiative' and 'achievements' sought by educational institutions.

3. The Island as a 'Learning Environment' Fosters Connections with Local Communities

The venue is Izu Oshima, approximately 105 minutes by high-speed jet boat from Takeshiba Pier in Tokyo. Using a decommissioned school gymnasium as a classroom, the program integrates island resources such as Mount Mihara, Namihaya Port, the Great Stratigraphic Exposure, and open-air sunset hot springs into learning and experiential activities. The experience of urban students spending several days on a remote island can spark interest in regional areas and create lasting connections. This camp is a small-scale practice of connecting students and communities through learning.

4. Promoting Female Students in Tech, Regardless of Gender or Physical Ability

Drone piloting primarily involves controller operation and does not depend on physical strength or gender. Amid ongoing concerns about low female representation in STEM and tech fields, many female students participate in this camp each year, progressing from beginners to national qualification holders.

Oshin Dream Inc. originated from a vision to establish Myanmar’s first women’s university. Despite shifting its business to drone education in Japan due to political changes, the company continues to uphold its founding mission of empowering women and expanding educational opportunities through initiatives like this camp.
