This drama adaptation of Yamazaki Toyoko's representative work, "The Great White Tower," which delves into the unknown inner workings of the medical world, is presented in two parts. It depicts the fierce power struggles and the drama of love and hate within a university hospital, revolving around the competition for the next professorship. The heaven and hell seen by an ambitious doctor.
[Synopsis]
Assistant Professor Zaizen (Hiroaki Murakami) at the National Naniwa University Hospital is a surgeon full of confidence and ambition. Married to the daughter of the Naniwa Medical Association's vice chairman, he is the strongest candidate for the next professorship. However, his mentor, Professor Higashi (Hideaki Nitani), who dislikes Zaizen's arrogant attitude, attempts to recruit the next professor from outside the university. After a fierce election, Zaizen secures the professorship, but his arrogance leads to a misdiagnosis and the death of a patient. He clashes with Assistant Professor Sato (Mitsuru Hirata), who tries to uphold his conscience as a doctor, but ultimately wins the first trial against the bereaved family.
