< What is ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)? >

ICL is an abbreviation for Implantable Contact Lens. It is a vision correction method that involves inserting a small lens into the eye to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

The material is a highly biocompatible, hydrophilic material called Collamer, which contains collagen, and is gentle on the eye, making it less likely to be recognized as a foreign body.

In Japan, it was approved as a high-risk medical device by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in February 2010.

Since ICL involves inserting a lens into the eye, there is no need to ablate the cornea, and there are no concerns about discomfort or the lens dislodging, as with contact lenses.

Furthermore, it is not visible to others that a lens has been inserted.

This treatment is also known as "permanent contact lenses" because it does not require daily troublesome maintenance or removal.

The ICL used is a lens with a hole in the center, called a "HOLE ICL," which reduces the risk of complications such as cataracts after treatment, enabling a safer procedure.

Our clinic's treatments are performed by doctors certified by STAAR SURGICAL, USA.

Shinagawa Myopia Clinic received an award from STAAR SURGICAL, USA, for the highest number of ICL cases in Japan in 2025. This is the 7th consecutive year of receiving this award since 2019. As of the end of March 2026, we have a track record of over 120,000 cases.

< Frequently Asked Questions about ICL >

Q Please tell me about the ICL used. A We use HOLE (perforated) ICLs manufactured by STAAR SURGICAL. They were approved by the U.S. FDA in 2005 and by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare as a high-risk medical device in 2010. The lens is soft and foldable, allowing for a small incision of approximately 3mm, which heals naturally with eye drops, eliminating the need for sutures.

Q Are the doctors who perform the treatment certified? A Only certified doctors perform the treatment. Our clinic has 25 certified doctors (including 8 instructors).

Q Is hospitalization required for the treatment? A ICL is an outpatient procedure, so hospitalization is not required.

Q Is it covered by insurance? A As it is a self-pay medical service, it is not covered by health insurance. However, depending on the terms of your life insurance or medical insurance policy, you may be eligible to receive benefits.

Please contact your insurance company and inquire about "Implantable lens insertion surgery for eyes with a crystalline lens."

Additionally, individuals who have paid over ¥100,000 in medical expenses in a year may be eligible for a tax refund through their final tax return. Please keep your treatment receipts and submit them when filing your tax return. For details, please contact your local tax office.

Q Can others tell by looking at my eyes that I have a lens inserted? A The lens is inserted behind the iris, so it is not visible to the naked eye.

Q Do I feel a foreign body sensation due to the insertion of the lens? A You may feel a foreign body sensation in the early stages after treatment, but it usually improves gradually. You will not experience the foreign body sensation associated with wearing contact lenses.

Q Can I undergo cataract treatment after ICL treatment? A Cataract treatment is possible after the inserted lens is removed.

Q Is maintenance required? A Daily maintenance is not required. However, regular post-operative check-ups are necessary (the day after surgery, 1 week later, 1 month later, 3 months later, 6 months later, 1 year later, and annually thereafter).
