In 2026, Yokohama City and Busan Metropolitan City will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their partnership. To commemorate this, the Yokohama Eurasia Culture Museum is holding a special exhibition "Korean Handicrafts - Embroidery, Bojagi, Maedeup..." introducing the collection of Mr. Mitsuo and Ms. Chikae Suzuki, who have served as Chief Consul at the Consulate-General of Japan in Busan and Consul-General at the Consulate-General of Japan in Jeju, among other positions. The exhibition has been running since April 25, Reiwa 8 (2026). During the Joseon Dynasty, women of the middle and upper classes created various handicrafts such as bojagi (wrapping cloths) and jumoni (pouches) in the anbang, a female-centered living space in their residences, sewing auspicious patterns and designs wishing for family prosperity and happiness. These works expressed various ingenuities and aesthetic sensibilities in daily life. In modern times, with the spread of women's education, new handicraft techniques also spread to the general public. Later, during a period of upheaval in nation-building and the devastation of the Korean War, handicrafts became a means of supporting household finances. After the 1960s, women's social advancement as a workforce progressed. Meanwhile, traditional culture was re-evaluated, and the practice of handicrafts gained a new status as "handicrafts" conveying Korean traditional culture, moving from "home crafts," leading to the creation of rich works by artists. Mr. and Mrs. Suzuki were attracted by the charm of the "beauty of utility" in Korean handicrafts and woodwork, and collected items from the early 20th century to the present. We hope that this exhibition will help visitors appreciate the charm of traditional handicrafts and daily tools and re-recognize Korean culture. Period: April 25 (Sat) - July 5 (Sun), Reiwa 8 (2026) Opening Hours: 9:30 - 17:00 (ticket sales until 30 minutes before closing)
