The Wall Street Journal pointed out that this proposal highlights the deepening rift between the Trump administration and its European allies following Trump's decision to launch a war against Iran.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte visited Washington today to meet with Trump. Despite strained transatlantic alliance relations, Rutte sought to strengthen ties with Trump.
