The Kaohsiung City Government today established a digital nomad base in Kaohsiung at Pinway, Pier-2 Art Center. During the event, Pinway, the Youth Bureau's startup base, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Japan's Kumamoto City startup base, XOSS POINT. This collaboration aims to strengthen Kaohsiung's role as a node in the Asian innovation network through resource sharing and base connectivity.
Zhan Fang-guan, Deputy Minister of the National Development Council, stated that Taiwan possesses excellent public safety and technological infrastructure, with outstanding performance in its economic and entrepreneurial environment. The government has also relaxed regulations for attracting and employing foreign professionals, allowing digital nomad visas for up to two years. Combined with talent service centers, this helps attract international talent to develop in Taiwan.
Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Li Huai-ren pointed out that Kaohsiung combines a technology industry base with a natural environment of mountains, seas, rivers, and ports. The city government integrates tourism and venue resources and connects local businesses to provide an environment for 'working while living,' hoping to become the preferred city for digital nomads.
Lin Kai-hsuan, Director of the Youth Bureau, said that the Pinway base in Pier-2 is close to co-working spaces and accommodation industries, possessing the conditions to develop into a flagship base for Taiwan. In the future, the Kaohsiung base will provide on-site consultation and a remote work platform for international talent, hoping to deeply connect the Taiwan-Japan digital nomad communities and help Kaohsiung become a core hub for remote talent in Asia.
In addition, Shintaro Noguchi, Chief of the Startup and New Industry Support Division of Kumamoto City's Economic and Tourism Bureau, led a delegation to participate in the launch ceremony and interacted with local Taiwanese startup teams and domestic and international community partners. Japanese representatives not only focused on the spatial planning and operational model of Kaohsiung's digital nomad base but also exchanged views on startup incubation mechanisms, cross-border resource connectivity, and talent exchange.
