According to AFP, many international airlines have raised fuel surcharges after the United States and Israel jointly attacked Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to effectively blockade the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil supply route, in retaliation.

Amanda Woo, Chief Business Officer of AirAsia X, which is headquartered in Malaysia and operates flights to over 150 destinations in 25 countries, stated that they have progressively increased ticket prices by approximately 31% to 40%, with fuel surcharges rising by 20%. They have also implemented measures to mitigate the impact of the price increases, including reducing baggage fees.

Tony Fernandes, founder of AirAsia, said that ticket price increases are "unavoidable" and that AirAsia would reduce capacity on routes where it deems the fuel costs unaffordable.

However, AirAsia emphasized that due to strong demand for air travel, its original plans to open a Bahrain route in June and expand its network beyond Southeast Asia will proceed as scheduled. Bahrain will be AirAsia's first hub in the Middle East.

Woo noted that AirAsia can further expand its operations on routes where it can recoup the high fuel surcharges.

When asked how the ongoing Middle East war would affect the company's profits for the remainder of the year, AirAsia executives stated that the outlook currently remains "manageable," but ultimately depends on how long the crisis continues. (Translated by Chang Cheng-chien) 1150406
