Xie Yifeng, chairman of the KMT Changhua County Party Committee, Hung Jung-chang, secretary-general of the Changhua County Industrial Development and Investment Promotion Committee, and Ko Cheng-fang, a counselor for the Changhua County Government, are vying for the KMT nomination for Changhua County Magistrate. Recently, it was reported that the party central intends to nominate Wei Ping-cheng, who previously served as chairman of the KMT Assessment and Disciplinary Committee, to run for the position. This has sparked local backlash, with Xie Yan-hui, chairman of the KMT Erlin Township Party Committee, announcing her resignation.

Hsiao Ching-tien told a Central News Agency reporter that Wei Ping-cheng had long held the idea of serving Changhua. He had not expressed his stance earlier because both he and Wei Ping-cheng supported Xie Yifeng. Later, as Changhua County Council Speaker Hsieh Tien-lin sought re-election and the Hsieh family opposed Xie Yifeng running for Changhua County Magistrate, Hsiao only recommended Wei Ping-cheng to the party central for nomination in March.

Regarding name recognition and local connections, Hsiao Ching-tien said that Wei Ping-cheng's mother, Wei Chen Chun-hui, once served as mayor of Shetou Township and operated a sock weaving brand. Wei Ping-cheng himself also participated in township mayoral elections and is enthusiastic about public affairs, so he cannot be described as an "outsider" (空降, literally "airdrop"). With eight months remaining until the election, Wei Ping-cheng is a suitable candidate with explosive potential.

He added that besides Xie Yan-hui, perhaps others and party members have doubts about the nomination. He will find an appropriate time to report to everyone and communicate his thoughts.

Wei Ping-cheng stated that he is not an outsider. After graduating from law school, he worked in trade in Taipei for over 10 years to market Shetou socks. He then served as a lawyer for 15 years, commuting between Taipei and Changhua. If given the opportunity to be elected, he will contribute his knowledge and promote Changhua internationally.

Xie Yifeng issued a statement on the 5th, saying that if the party central nominates an overseas returnee to run, it must consider that the three individuals who have already expressed their intentions have invested manpower, material resources, and energy. It should be clarified whether "the success or failure of future elections will be borne by the party central, or by the county magistrate responsible for assisting in the election?"

Hung Jung-chang told the media that the nominated candidate should have a certain degree of name recognition and connect with local public opinion, hoping that the party central will consider carefully.

Ko Cheng-fang said that nominations could be through primary elections or direct nomination, but the prerequisites are that the system must be fair, the reasons clear, and the outcome convincing to the public. Those who have worked hard locally for a long time and covered the grassroots will be disheartened if the candidate is ultimately decided by an outsider, and supporters will also be disappointed. Past experience shows that "outsider" candidates have a tough time getting elected. (Edited by Li Ming-tsung) 1150406
