Climate change is causing frequent heatwaves and heavy rainfall, the spread of infectious diseases, and instability in agriculture and fisheries, severely impacting the economy and food security. To address this, CO2 emissions, one of the greenhouse gases, are being reduced in various sectors. However, due to industrial structural reasons, among others, there are sectors where electrification and conversion to new fuels are difficult, making reduction challenging. Furthermore, beyond emission control, addressing already emitted CO2 is also essential. The IEA (International Energy Agency) estimates that to achieve the 1.5°C target, approximately 85 million tons of CO2 per year by 2030 and about 1 billion tons per year by 2050 need to be directly captured and removed from the atmosphere. Among the various methods and technologies for capture and removal, DAC is attracting greater expectations due to its potential for future large-scale deployment and its unique features, such as the ability to mechanically and accurately measure the amount removed.

Planet Savers Inc. is developing a DAC system that is expected to significantly reduce costs, primarily in energy consumption and adsorbent expenses, by utilizing world-class synthesis technology possessed by the University of Tokyo for CO2 adsorbent "zeolite." Their DAC technology operates solely on electricity without requiring heat or water, making it a sustainable process. It also possesses unique strengths, such as an advantage in dry and cold regions where other methods are less effective, indicating high potential.

Through this Fund, Mitsui & Co. will co-create with Planet Savers Inc. from the development stage of the DAC system. Mitsui & Co. will also support the utilization of CO2 recovered by DAC in agricultural facilities, among others, and future expansion aimed at scaling up to large CO2 demanders, contributing to the social implementation of DAC and the creation of a sustainable future through CO2 recovery and utilization.
