The Pal System Federation (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Atsuyuki Shibusawa) submitted public comments on Thursday, July 9, regarding the government's draft document titled 'Direction and Action Guidelines for Future Nuclear Policy.' The federation argues that a strategic shift is necessary toward a renewable energy, energy conservation, and storage-centered approach, based on effectiveness, consistency, and safety considerations.

The public comments were submitted in response to the revised draft compiled by the government's nuclear subcommittee in June. The federation calls for a thorough review of the draft guidelines and sufficient public discussion, citing concerns in four key areas: feasibility of policy goals, economic viability of nuclear power, decommissioning and waste management challenges, and national security risks.
Key points of the submitted comments are as follows:
1. The target of 20% nuclear power in the 2030 energy mix is unachievable and inappropriate as a policy goal.
2. The economic viability of nuclear power has significantly deteriorated, making it a high-cost energy source.
3. Decommissioning and radioactive waste issues are severe, and current plans are unrealistic.
4. Nuclear power plants are difficult to defend under security threats.
