Nissay Plus Microinsurance Co., Ltd. (President: Hiyoshi Imakishi), a subsidiary of Nippon Life Insurance Company (President: Tomoji Asahi), and Global Trust Networks, Inc. (President: Hiroyuki Goto; hereinafter "GTN"), which comprehensively supports foreign residents in Japan with housing, telecommunications, financial services, and other aspects of daily life, have begun offering smartphone insurance for foreign residents.

Under this collaboration, Nissay Plus Microinsurance's "Smartphone Insurance" will be offered alongside GTN's GTN Mobile service, promoting an environment where foreign residents can use smartphones in Japan with peace of mind.

1. Background of the Collaboration

For foreign residents, smartphones are not merely communication tools but essential infrastructure supporting daily life and employment. From contacting family back home, job hunting, communicating with employers, administrative procedures, accessing medical and disaster-prevention information, to cashless payments—many aspects of life in Japan revolve around smartphones.

On the other hand, newly arrived foreigners or those unfamiliar with Japanese systems often lack adequate protection in case their smartphone is damaged or broken. Barriers such as insurance products being primarily in Japanese and complicated enrollment procedures mean that preparing for emergencies is often postponed. Repairing the latest models can cost between 50,000 and 100,000 yen※1—equivalent to approximately 20–40% of the average monthly income of foreign residents (approximately 250,000 yen)※2.

To address these unique concerns and challenges faced by foreign residents, GTN and Nissay Plus Microinsurance have partnered to offer an affordable "Smartphone Insurance" that provides risk coverage tailored to this population.

2. Details of the Collaboration

Under this initiative, GTN will act as an insurance agent, offering Nissay Plus Microinsurance's "Smartphone Insurance" in combination with GTN's multilingual support and SIM cards from its foreign-resident-focused telecommunications service, GTN Mobile. This enables foreign residents to secure emergency protection at the same time they begin using communication services in Japan—even immediately upon arrival and even without prior knowledge of Japanese systems.

The goal is to elevate smartphones from merely being functional as infrastructure to being usable with confidence and peace of mind.

<Main Features of Smartphone Insurance>

○ Affordable monthly premium of 200 yen

Available at just 200 yen per month per device, making it easy for foreign residents to prepare for emergencies without significant financial burden.

○ Coverage for smartphone damage

Covers repair costs for damage such as cracked screens due to drops, up to a maximum of 50,000 yen per policy period (cumulative over the insurance term), subject to a deductible.

○ Available regardless of device condition or carrier

Compatible with both new and used smartphones and all carriers. Even second-hand devices purchased immediately after arrival in Japan are eligible for coverage.

○ Enrollment and claims entirely via smartphone

All procedures—from enrollment to insurance claims—can be completed via smartphone. Applications can also be submitted at GTN stores when signing up for a SIM card.

3. Future Plans

Through this collaboration, both companies aim to create an environment where smartphones are not seen as a liability when broken, but as reliable infrastructure that foreign residents can use with confidence. The number of foreign residents in Japan is projected to reach approximately 4.13 million※3, with about 2.57 million employed※4 by 2025, and further growth is expected. Going forward, both companies will continue to explore initiatives that enhance convenience and improve living conditions based on the evolving needs and lifestyles of foreign residents.
