About the Exhibition 'Van Gogh's Drawbridge and the Impressionists: Masterpieces from the Wallraf-Richartz Museum'
The Wallraf-Richartz Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne, Germany, boasts one of Europe’s finest and most extensive collections, with approximately 70,000 works spanning from the Middle Ages to Post-Impressionism. Its origins trace back to 1824, when the collection of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf, a theology professor at the University of Cologne, was bequeathed. The museum opened in 1861 thanks to a donation by industrialist Johann Heinrich Richartz. Having overcome wartime damage, the collection was expanded through civic support. In 2001, the museum relocated to a new building, and the Fondation Corboud donated Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, further enriching the collection.
From this rich collection, the exhibition presents a comprehensive lineup of French Impressionism and its surrounding movements. It features artists who struggled between tradition and innovation, such as Manet and Corot; Monet and Renoir, who pursued the expression of light; Cézanne and Signac, who theoretically pursued beauty; and Matisse and Utrillo, who liberated personal sensibility through color. Through 70 works by 42 masters, visitors will recognize how revolutionary developments in art history unfolded through mutual influences across generations. Highlights include Manet’s 'Bunch of Asparagus,' collected during a pivotal moment in German art, and Van Gogh’s 'Drawbridge,' a standout work in the Impressionist lineage.
