Sapporo Lion Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Hiroyuki Tazawa), a group company of Sapporo Holdings Ltd. that operates beer halls and restaurants, will celebrate its 127th anniversary on August 4, 2026. To express our gratitude for over a century of patronage and our wish for continued support in the new era, we will hold events that can be enjoyed at Sapporo Lion chain stores nationwide (excluding some stores) and through our official app "club LION App" starting July 1, 2026.

August 4th is the Birthday of the Beer Hall

"Beer Hall Day" was established by Sapporo Lion in 1999, upon reaching its 100th anniversary. August 4th, the founding date, was designated as "the anniversary of the birth of the first beer hall in Japan" and officially certified by the Japan Anniversary Association. Sapporo Lion, which has evolved alongside the beer hall, has been delivering dining experiences that allow customers to feel the "JOY OF LIVING" since its founding, and this year marks its 127th anniversary.

At Sapporo Lion chain stores nationwide (excluding some stores), including Ginza Lion and YEBISU BAR, we will hold a half-price draft beer event exclusively on "Beer Hall Day," August 4 (Tue), as well as other events starting from July 1 (Wed).

Join us for an exciting toast experience that colors the summer, unique to Sapporo Lion, which has been weaving the history of toasts alongside Sapporo Beer, celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

Half-Price Draft Beer Event - Limited to the Day

On August 4th, "Beer Hall Day," the founding date, all available draft beers at Sapporo Lion chain stores nationwide (excluding some stores) will be offered at half price all day.

While the types of draft beers available vary by store, all draft beers on tap are eligible, including "Sapporo Nama Beer Kuro Label," "YEBISU BEER," "YEBISU Premium Black," "Kohaku YEBISU Premium Amber," "Shiho-no-ka," "Edel Pils," and "SORACHI 1984."

Sapporo Lion's Founding: "Japan's First Beer Hall"

Japan's First Beer Hall "Ebisu Beer Hall"

Japan's first beer hall, "Ebisu Beer Hall," opened 126 years ago on August 4, 1899 (Meiji 32), as a promotional store for "YEBISU BEER" at the Shimbashi riverside in Ginza (present-day Ginza 8-chome, Kyobashi-ku Minami-Kinsoku-cho 5-banchi).

It opened by renting the second floor (35 tsubo) of a two-story brick building. The interior was extremely modern for its time, with linoleum flooring and chairs and tables made from beer barrel wood.

At the time, while soba (mori/kake) was sold for 1 sen 8 rin, coffee for 2 sen, and Japanese sake (jokyu) for 25 sen 2 rin per sho, beer was still a luxury item at 10 sen for 500ml. However, Ebisu Beer Hall was extremely popular, always full, selling out daily, and averaging 800 visitors per day. Some people even traveled by horse-drawn carriage from afar.

Sapporo Lion will continue to strive to be a base for disseminating beer culture, creating communities centered around toasts, and contributing to the development of food culture and local communities, alongside the smiles of customers that have been fostered in beer halls loved across generations.
