Japanese Parent Group to Host International Angelman Syndrome Conference in Kyoto

Angel no Kai is a Japanese parent support group for families of children with Angelman syndrome, a rare chromosomal disorder.

The organization is pleased to announce that it will host the international academic conference of the Angelman Syndrome Alliance (ASA), a global research consortium, in Kyoto this September.

● What is Angelman Syndrome?

Angelman syndrome is a designated intractable disease affecting approximately 1 in 15,000 people. It is caused by a functional abnormality of the UBE3A gene on chromosome 15, resulting in severe intellectual and developmental disabilities, epilepsy, speech impairments, and a characteristic happy demeanor with frequent laughter. The condition affects neurological development and often involves motor and sleep disorders. Despite these challenges, individuals with Angelman syndrome are typically gentle and display frequent smiles.

● What is Angel no Kai?

Founded in April 1998, Angel no Kai aims to support the healthy growth and development of children with Angelman syndrome through information sharing, mutual support, and fellowship among parents. The organization currently has over 430 member families.
