Starting June 29, 2026 (Mon), Eishin Gakuen High School in Osaka Prefecture will lift its ban on wearing school-approved sunglasses, in collaboration with Zoff, the eyewear brand operated by Inter-Mestic Co., Ltd. This initiative aims to protect students' eyes from intense sunlight and UV rays during school commutes and outdoor activities by encouraging the use of sunglasses as part of daily school life.
Zoff is working closely with students and educators, respecting their perspectives, with the goal of establishing a culture where wearing sunglasses becomes a natural and accepted practice among youth as a way to protect eye health.
Eishin Gakuen High School promotes an educational philosophy that values individuality and cultivates students' ability to make independent choices and shape their own futures. This initiative is part of that vision, aiming to empower students to proactively consider their long-term health. In April 2026, Zoff conducted on-site classes for first- and second-year high school students, educating them about the effects of UV radiation on the eyes and the importance of eye health, helping students deepen their understanding and encouraging them to take ownership of their well-being.
Student Council-Led Sunglasses Awareness Campaign
The initiative is spearheaded by members of the student council, who launched a campaign called "Eishin Original Eyewear" to promote sunglasses use across the entire student body. After participating in Zoff's educational sessions, they deepened their knowledge about UV protection and eye health. Based on this learning, they selected 12 types of sunglasses suitable for school life, focusing on designs that would harmonize with the school uniform and be practical for daily use. The chosen models feature 20% tinted lenses—light enough to blend naturally into student life, yet effective for UV protection, and safe for bicycle commuting even at night.
By placing students at the center of this effort, Eishin Gakuen High School is creating a hands-on learning experience that encourages students to understand, reflect on, and act regarding UV protection and eye health. Peer-led outreach is expected to foster empathy among students and promote broader awareness and acceptance of sunglasses use throughout the school.
Comment from Ms. Kyo Sakahara, Vice Principal, Eishin Gakuen High School
"While UV exposure has been touched upon in subjects like social studies and health education, this initiative has enabled students to engage in much deeper learning. As part of our upcoming 100th anniversary celebrations next year, we are embracing new challenges like this one. Initially, there were reactions like, 'Sunglasses with the uniform? Wearing sunglasses at school?' But by taking ownership—led by the student council—we are approaching this as an exciting leap into uncharted territory. By embracing a completely new style, we hope not only to protect students' eyes from UV rays but also to inspire each student to make new personal discoveries."
Building a Culture of Eye Protection Together with Students and Schools
Zoff is committed to dispelling negative perceptions about sunglasses and carefully communicating the importance of protecting eyes from UV radiation to young people and educational institutions. Under the slogan "For Your Eyes, For the Future," Zoff will leverage its expertise as an eyewear brand to partner with schools, students, and parents in fostering a culture of UV protection that becomes a natural part of everyday life. While recognizing the importance of traditional school rules and customs in maintaining safety and order, Zoff aims to work collaboratively with educators through ongoing dialogue to co-create a "new normal" centered on eye protection.
