1. Purpose of Joint Research
This joint research aims to realize an "AI Museum Bath" that scientifically and objectively visualizes the effects of cultural and artistic experiences, and in the future, proposes optimal cultural and artistic experiences for each individual. This is based on the results of the "Museum Bath" demonstration experiments that Kyushu Sangyo University has been conducting nationwide since September 2020 (accumulating scientific data from over 1,500 individuals at over 100 museums nationwide, including The National Museum of Western Art).
* "Museum" is defined based on the Museum Act as facilities such as historical, art, and science museums.
2. What is Museum Bath®︎?
"Museum Bath®︎ (an activity that utilizes the healing effects of museums for health promotion and disease prevention through museum visits)" is research proposed by Professor Izumi Ogata, Specially Appointed Professor at the Faculty of Regional Co-creation, Kyushu Sangyo University.
Similar to forest bathing and sea bathing, it scientifically verifies effects such as:
Relaxation through appreciation
Brain activation
Regulation of the autonomic nervous system
Stress reduction
Internationally, movements to utilize cultural and artistic facilities for health and well-being policies are expanding, including:
UK's Creative Health
Museum prescriptions in countries like Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, and Taiwan
Art therapy in Europe and the United States
Comment from Professor Izumi Ogata, Kyushu Sangyo University:
"Museum Bath is a new initiative that contributes to improving people's health and well-being by leveraging the power of culture and art. Through repeated demonstrations at museums nationwide, we have seen the potential for cultural and artistic experiences in museums to bring about positive changes in people's minds and bodies. What we are aiming for next is 'AI Museum Bath.' This is a future where we scientifically determine which artworks, exhibitions, and appreciation experiences lead to better well-being based on the individual's physical and mental state and interests at the time, and propose the most suitable cultural and artistic experience for each person. In this joint research, we aim to further enhance the evaluation foundation by utilizing Yume Cloud Japan's measurement and analysis technology."
3. Possibilities Revealed by Last Year's Demonstration Experiment Results
Last year, Yume Cloud Japan conducted Before/After evaluations using the well-being visualization technology "MindScale" in the "Museum Bath" demonstration experiments promoted by Kyushu Sangyo University at 10 locations nationwide.
MindScale is a technology that analyzes the autonomic nervous system balance (tension ↔ relaxation) and brain arousal level (arousal ↔ sleepiness) from approximately 30 seconds of voice, visualizing the physical and mental state.
In last year's demonstration experiment, approximately 83% of participants with high stress levels showed improvement or maintenance of their condition, indicating the potential for cultural and artistic experiences to contribute to well-being improvement.
- Facilities: 8 facilities nationwide (10 demonstration experiments in total)
1 The National Museum of Western Art (Taito-ku, Tokyo), 2 Obuse Museum - Nakajima Chinami Kan (Obuse Town, Nagano Prefecture), 3 Minokamo City Museum (Minokamo City, Gifu Prefecture), 4 Kita-Nagoya City Museum of History and Folklore (Kita-Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture), 5 Nagoya University Museum (Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture), 6 Shimonoseki City Archaeological Museum (Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture), 7 Takabe Town Art Museum (Takabe Town, Miyazaki Prefecture), 8 Chatan Town Museum of History and People (Chatan Town, Okinawa Prefecture)
- Number of Participants: 322
- Autonomic Nervous System Improvement Rate: 85% (including no change) See Graph 1
- MS Score (Overall Stress Value) Improvement Rate: 49% (excluding no change) See Graph 2
Furthermore, score improvements were confirmed after appreciation in 19 out of 22 conditions.
1 Autonomic Nervous System Balance (Autonomic nervous system balance has improved in almost all participating museums)
* Blue: Before appreciation, Red: After appreciation
2 MS Score (Overall Stress Value) (Stress has improved in almost all participating museums)
* Blue: Before appreciation, Red: After appreciation
4. This Year's Demonstration Experiment Plan
This year, we plan to continue demonstration experiments at the following facilities:
1 The National Museum of Western Art: August 21, September 18, October 16, 2026, all during evening hours on Fridays
2 Obuse Museum - Nakajima Chinami Kan: August 22 (Sat), 23 (Sun), 2026
3 Shimonoseki City Archaeological Museum: August 4, 2026 (Tue)
4 Minamiaso Lunar Observatory (under adjustment)
5 Chatan Town Museum of History and People (under adjustment), etc.

5. Expectations for the Demonstration Experiment (Comments from Experts)
1 Masayuki Tanaka, Director, The National Museum of Western Art
"It is said that appreciating artworks at museums has a significant impact on mental and physical health. We expect this experiment to scientifically clarify the role museums can play in solving social issues."
2 Noriaki Tsuruta, Director, Obuse Museum - Nakajima Chinami Kan
"We expect that by demonstrating that Museum Bath contributes to the well-being of residents and visitors, and by positioning the original raison d'être of museums within local governments across Japan, more people will feel 'happiness.'"
3 Shinji Hamasaki, Director, Shimonoseki City Archaeological Museum
"We expect that the effects on mental health support for students and municipal employees, as well as frailty prevention for the elderly, will be quantitatively demonstrated, and that the role of museums will be newly positioned in policies for realizing well-being in future society."
4 Tetsuro Takayama, Chairman, Kanemachi Jiyu Clinic, Medical Corporation Shikokai (Visiting Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Tokai University)
"We have high expectations for the positive effects of Museum Bath on blood pressure and mental health. We are convinced that this research will form the foundation for large-scale clinical research to generate evidence usable in actual medical settings, and we wish for its further development."
5 Yuji Yoshimura, Specially Appointed Associate Professor, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo
"Similar to the analysis of visitor behavior using AI and big data that has been conducted at the Louvre Museum and the National Museum of Nature and Science, the Museum Bath research is an attempt to elucidate the museum experience based on data. We look forward to new research developments that integrate behavioral data such as visitor movement trajectories and dwell times with changes in mind and body."
6. Goals of This Joint Research
In this joint research, we will proceed with:
Analysis of changes in autonomic nervous system state and brain arousal levels before and after the "Museum Bath" experience
Analysis of well-being change patterns using AI
Application to the design of individually optimized cultural and artistic experiences
In the future, we aim to realize an "AI Museum Bath" that can make proposals such as, "This artwork, this exhibition experience is more suitable for you right now."
Comment from Daisuke Yoshida, CEO of Yume Cloud Japan Inc.:
"In last year's 'Museum Bath' demonstration, we participated from a technical standpoint in the new initiative of visualizing the Before/After of cultural and artistic experiences. While the value of culture and art is often discussed intuitively, there is a possibility to visualize these changes more objectively using AI and biological analysis technology.
In this joint research, we will contribute from the perspective of measurement and analysis infrastructure towards the realization of 'AI Museum Bath' that Kyushu Sangyo University aims for."
7. Future Developments
This initiative is expected to expand beyond museums and art museums to companies, local governments, and other areas, including:
Corporate health management
Cultural tourism, health tourism, well-being tourism
Sports mental conditioning
Mental health support for children, students, and university students in school education
Health maintenance and promotion for the elderly (frailty prevention)
