The Origin of 'Chanko Nabe'

Sumo stables began serving hot pot meals during the Meiji era. It started when the 19th yokozuna's Dewanoumi stable adopted hot pot as the main meal for sumo wrestlers. While several theories exist, one widely accepted explanation comes from the master-disciple relationship in sumo stables: 'chan' meaning 'father' and 'ko' meaning 'child,' symbolizing them eating together. Packed with vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, meat, and fish, the dish is well-balanced, easy to digest, warms the body, and boosts metabolism—making it a healthy cuisine born from Japan’s climate.
