Located in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto, Yanagidani Kannon Yokokuji is known as the birthplace of "Hanachozu" (floating flowers in the water purification pavilion), which has now spread nationwide.
Hanachozu, which has been synonymous with "Instagrammable" spots for temple visits and was meant to be "viewed," will be updated into a new experiential memorial service where worshippers can "participate" and "create" themselves.

During the Golden Week period from Sunday, May 3 to Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the "Hanachozu Matsuri" (Flower Water Pavilion Festival), which fuses tradition and modern sensibility, will be held. This includes an experience where participants can choose and float their favorite flowers, and a "Flower Memorial Service" where they can mourn their beloved pets with flowers and float water stupas.
This new endeavor stems from the chief priest's desire to deepen the connection between "Hanachozu," which has been a spiritual resting place for worshippers, and the "memorial service," which is the original significance of the temple.

Taking a step forward from the conventional style of just viewing beautiful Hanachozu, it is released as a participatory memorial service where each worshipper becomes the main character.
Those who apply for the memorial service will receive a water stupa upon viewing, choose one flower at the Sanmon gate, and float it on the water surface of the Hanachozu spot in front of the Amidadou hall. (As flowers are limited in number, this will end once they run out.)

The tranquility of mind when floating a flower with a wish. You can enjoy the "co-created art" that changes its expression momentarily as the feelings of all worshippers overlap. In addition, a "Kaen-no-Wa" (Circle of Floral Connection), an arch-shaped arrangement of colorful seasonal flowers, is placed within the precincts.
During the period, a photo contest will also be held. You can participate in the photo contest by posting on SNS with the hashtag "#柳谷観音花手水まつり" (#YanagidaniKannonHanachozuMatsuri).
