June 30, 2026, Tokyo — Workato Inc. (Headquarters: Palo Alto, California, USA), a leading agentic orchestration platform provider, and its Japanese subsidiary Workato Corporation (Location: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Allan Teng; hereinafter, Workato) announced today the release of a case study on its official website detailing how SHIFT Inc. (hereinafter, SHIFT), a company specializing in software testing and quality assurance, is utilizing Workato. Workato will continue to actively publish case studies on Agentic AI utilization on its Japanese website.
Background Challenges for SHIFT's AI Platform Adoption
SHIFT has achieved rapid growth as a comprehensive DX service company, with software testing-based quality assurance services at its core. As its sales have expanded to nearly 130 billion yen and its workforce to over 15,000 employees, its core systems have faced demands to "rapidly respond to rapid growth and expansion," "enable ultra-high cycle management," and "achieve high levels of governance and security."
To meet these demands, SHIFT adopted a best-of-breed approach, allowing individual business systems to be optimized, introduced, and replaced as needed. Simultaneously, it implemented a model that achieves overall optimization through an architecture where multiple systems are interconnected via an integrated platform for data and processes distributed across them.
As a company aiming to be AI-native, SHIFT has made both "providing AI-related services to the market" and "utilizing AI internally" major themes. Specifically, it is currently promoting the efficiency of back-office operations across the group by AI-enabling its internal back office and creating a shared office environment for approximately 40 group companies, coupled with AI implementation.
Amidst the growing momentum for company-wide AI utilization, the necessity to integrate AI agents not only into individual task efficiency but also into core business processes such as quoting, order reception, invoicing, revenue recognition, and expense settlement became clear. The establishment of an orchestration platform connecting core systems and AI emerged as an urgent challenge.
Notable Achievements: 5x Increase in Citizen Developers in 3 Months, Up to 40% Improvement in Core Business Efficiency
Workato's utilization, which began with establishing a business automation foundation through iPaaS, functions as an integrated platform for data integration between multiple SaaS applications, automating the maintenance of Salesforce data that occurred over 10,000 times per month in each department. By leveraging Workato's Workbot for Teams, a mechanism was realized where field staff can update Salesforce records simply by entering commands from their Microsoft Teams chat screen, significantly reducing the burden of requests to administrators and manual labor.
The next phase saw the expansion of citizen development. This approach involves business department staff undergoing Workato training and obtaining certifications, after which they independently implement business automation for their own departments. Cases emerged where even IT-averse staff could implement business automation in just a few hours using no-code, and Workato became widely adopted. Comparative verification with implementations using other integration services showed approximately double the processing speed, providing a basis for continued utilization. Along with the expansion of citizen development, the IT department established guidelines centered on three axes: lifecycle management, asset management, and operational monitoring, expanding the number of developers from the initial 2-4 to approximately 30. In the last three months, the number of AI agent developers has increased at a pace of about five times.
Currently, the most focused area is its utilization as an Enterprise MCP platform connecting AI agents with core systems. In order entry tasks, which previously required staff to manually read information from PDFs and enter it into the SFA, Workato is now used as the MCP platform to link the APIs of AI-OCR, Salesforce, and workflow systems, enabling AI agents to automatically execute the entire process from PDF reading to SFA input and approval requests.
Governance is ensured by having humans perform only the final approval. Furthermore, during the implementation process, a design error occurred where APIs were executed using service accounts. However, by correcting the design to execute using the user's own account, a state was achieved where permission control, security, and governance are guaranteed to be equivalent to direct human operation. The ability to accumulate such cycles of failure and improvement internally is itself a significant asset as practical knowledge for AI utilization. The results of AI utilization are reported weekly to management, with efficiency improvements of up to 40% achieved in some operations.
While high-end enterprise products exist in the information integration field, many are difficult to operate without dedicated engineers or require significant time to master. In contrast, Workato offers ease of use that allows non-engineers to participate in development after about a day of training, while also possessing enterprise-level functionality and reliability. Its usage-based pricing model also enhances transparency in introduction costs, making it easier to explain to management.
