WOM CLINIC GINZA (Location: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Director: Junya Fukabori) conducted a survey on "Awareness and Demand for Male Beauty Treatments" targeting men aged 20-50 who are interested in aesthetic treatments.

In recent years, with the expansion of the male skincare market and the spread of information on social media, the number of men considering aesthetic treatments has gradually increased.

However, compared to the female market, many men feel psychological resistance and difficulty visiting clinics, and the actual specific concerns and barriers to seeking treatment have not been sufficiently clarified.

So, what kind of appearance concerns do modern men actually have, and for what reasons do they feel barriers to seeking treatment?

Therefore, WOM CLINIC GINZA (https://wom-clinic.com/) conducted a survey on "Awareness and Demand for Male Beauty Treatments" targeting men aged 20-50 who are interested in aesthetic treatments.

About 30% have experience with aesthetic treatments! Men's No. 1 concern is "Spots/Freckles"!

Approximately 90% of men have a positive attitude towards aesthetic treatments.

First, when asked about their "consideration status regarding 'aesthetic treatments'," the following results were obtained:

"Have actually received (33.0%)"

"Have decided to receive, currently booking/choosing a clinic (14.5%)"

"Want to receive but haven't taken concrete action yet (40.0%)"

"Have never considered (12.5%)"

Since about half responded "Have actually received" or "Have decided to receive, currently booking/choosing a clinic," it can be seen that aesthetic treatments are becoming a more familiar option for men.

Also, "Want to receive but haven't taken concrete action yet" was the most common response at 40%, suggesting that while there is a desire to receive treatment, some kind of barrier may be preventing them from taking the first step.

So, what are the specific "appearance concerns" that trigger consideration for aesthetic treatments?

Men's most concerning appearance issue is "Spots/Freckles"

When asked about "parts of their appearance they are currently concerned about," the most common response was "Spots/freckles (41.1%)," followed by "Wrinkles (laugh lines, forehead, crow's feet) (35.6%)" and "Beard thickness/shaving marks (34.2%)".

Aging signs such as "spots" and "wrinkles" ranked higher than "beard" concerns.

It is presumed that many men feel the limits of self-care for accumulated skin damage that becomes more noticeable with age.

When did they start becoming aware of these changes in their appearance?

From here, we asked those who did not respond "No particular areas of concern" in the previous question.

"30s" is the most common age for men to become aware of appearance concerns.

When asked about the "age at which they started becoming concerned about their appearance," the following results were obtained:

"10s (11.6%)"

"20s (24.6%)"

"30s (34.1%)"

"40s (23.0%)"

"50s (6.7%)"

"30s" was the most common, followed by "20s," indicating that men are becoming sensitive to changes in their appearance at a relatively early stage.

Also, many people started noticing in their "40s," but what triggered them to become concerned about their appearance?

Triggers for self-awareness of concerns: "Moments of objective self-reflection"

When asked about the "triggers for becoming concerned," the most common response was "Looked closely in the mirror (64.3%)," followed by "Saw myself in photos or videos (50.1%)" and "Compared myself to other men (same age or younger) (26.9%)".

It is clear that moments of objective self-reflection through mirrors and photos, rather than comparison with others, serve as triggers for becoming aware of appearance concerns.

In particular, the fact that about half mentioned "photos and videos" is thought to be influenced by the increased opportunities to see one's own face on screen in daily life, due to the establishment of online meetings and the widespread use of smartphones.
