The Evolution of Withworks

Our company was established in 1997 as Nana Corporate Communications, Inc., and began its journey with the creation of print internal newsletters, focusing on "internal communication" within companies. In 2002, we launched a planning competition, the predecessor to the current "Shanaiho Award," and published the "Internal Newsletter White Paper," contributing to the establishment and development of the industry's foundation.

In 2013, we changed our company name to Withworks Co., Ltd., expanding our business beyond internal newsletter creation to include IC consulting and internal newsletter/organizational diagnostics. Furthermore, in 2017, we developed the SaaS "Shanaiho App," expanding our IC support for companies through digital IC platform development and the operation of communities for practical professionals.

Enhanced to "IC White Paper" for greater usability

Withworks' "Internal Newsletter White Paper" will be renewed as "IC White Paper" starting with the 2026 edition. Previously, the "Internal Newsletter White Paper" focused on surveys of internal newsletter operations, such as operational structure, publication frequency, and KPI settings. Meanwhile, in recent years, the role of internal communication has significantly changed due to the growing interest in human capital management and engagement improvement.

In response to this trend, the "IC White Paper" will expand its research scope beyond internal newsletters to encompass all of IC. We plan to broadly investigate themes related to corporate culture and organizational development, including engagement improvement measures, communication outside of working hours, anniversary events, and the sentiment of communication between management and employees.

The "Shanaiho Award," Japan's largest internal newsletter competition, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026. It began in 2002 as the "National Internal Newsletter Planning Competition" and was renamed in 2016. In 2026, we received applications from a record 253 companies, with 566 proposals submitted.

This award is more than just a recognition ceremony. It aims to boost the motivation of IC professionals and improve the overall quality of internal newsletters in Japan. The judging process emphasizes the "objectives and design" of the media and proposals, evaluating initiatives that contribute to solving management issues and fostering organizational culture from multiple perspectives. All participating companies, regardless of whether they win an award, receive detailed feedback from three judges, which can be used to improve their IC strategies.

In recent years, workshops and networking events have been held alongside the awards ceremony. Through collaboration with "IC Meetup," a community launched this year to consider the ideal state of IC connecting management and the front lines, this year's "Shanaiho Award" aims to become a broader platform where IC professionals can celebrate, learn from, and inspire each other. Future Outlook for Withworks

In April 2026, Noriyuki Tobuchi, Professor Emeritus at Matsuyama University and a researcher in organizational development and human capital management, joined Withworks full-time.
