WHISMR Launches "Binaural Face W-FACE1", a Pseudo Dummy Head Unit to Expand the Functionality of the "W-BM1" Binaural Microphone

WHISMR LLC (Representative: Yuji Yamada), which develops the binaural microphone "WHISMR W-BM1", will start selling the expansion option "Binaural Face W-FACE1" for more natural binaural recording on March 31, 2026.

This product is an expansion unit with a "pseudo dummy head structure". By attaching it retroactively to the W-BM1, it replicates the diffraction and shielding effects of sound generated on the surface of the face, specifically improving the sound image reproducibility in the frontal direction. It realizes more natural and three-dimensional binaural recording without compromising portability.

Development Background The binaural microphone "WHISMR W-BM1" has been supported by many users for its portability, allowing full-scale 3D recording with just a smartphone. On the other hand, binaural microphones consisting "only of ears" have a challenge where the frontal sound image tends to become somewhat ambiguous compared to a full dummy head.

In binaural recording, the reflection, diffraction, and shielding of the face surface greatly affect sound image localization. Therefore, after many prototypes, we have newly developed the "Binaural Face W-FACE1" as an expansion unit that can add only the acoustic benefits of a dummy head while maintaining portability.

Main Features of "Binaural Face W-FACE1"

1. Replicates the acoustic effects of the face surface and naturally complements the quality of the sound image By attaching the W-FACE1, elements of diffraction, shielding, and reflection occurring on the face surface are added, fulfilling the role of supplementing the naturalness of the sound image. It contributes to recordings where the "sense of presence" of voices and instruments can be felt more strongly. * Individual perception of the sound image may vary.

2. Silicone rubber face part (hardness 85°) The face part uses silicone rubber with a hardness of 85°. It balances stable acoustic characteristics and high durability, making it suitable for outdoor recording as well.

3. Expandability with a dedicated extension rod A dedicated extension rod that extends the 1/4-inch screw hole on the top of the W-BM1 upwards is included. It is also possible to attach further options such as smartphone holders, small accessories, and decorative parts.

4. Portability remains intact Designed to not compromise the advantage of the compact W-BM1, it can be easily carried outdoors.
