Launch of New Version of Image Recognition AI Solution 'mitococa Edge'

In the 'JR West Group Medium-Term Management Plan 2030' announced in April 2026, the JR West Group identified 'Infrastructure Solutions'—deploying technologies developed within the group to society—as a key focus area, working beyond the boundaries of railways to address social issues. The 'mitococa' series, centered on the group’s image recognition technology, is a key solution driving these efforts.

To further accelerate this, West Japan Railway Company (JR West) has significantly evolved the image recognition AI solution 'mitococa Edge' through co-creation with EIZO Corporation (Headquarters: Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture; President & COO: Masaki Ebisu) and will release the new version on May 21, 2026. By optimizing and incorporating 'mitococa AI,' which was refined in railway operations, onto EIZO’s edge devices, processing speed has been improved by approximately five times compared to the previous configuration where 'mitococa AI' operated on IP cameras. This product contributes to improved safety and productivity in diverse fields, including railways, healthcare, manufacturing, and social infrastructure.

1. Overview of the new 'mitococa Edge'
'mitococa Edge' is an edge-type computer that completes image recognition on-site where surveillance cameras are installed, instantly detecting and notifying of abnormalities such as congestion, intrusion, falls, and loitering. It can analyze images from up to five cameras simultaneously, and settings and checks can be easily performed via a browser. In this new version, both companies jointly rebuilt the AI execution environment, optimized GPU performance, and improved heat dissipation design, resulting in a five-fold increase in processing speed.

2. About Edge AI
Edge AI is a mechanism where image recognition is completed on a small computer near the surveillance cameras. Its features include real-time detection and notification regardless of communication conditions because video data does not need to be sent externally, privacy protection as images do not leave the facility, and reduced running costs such as cloud usage fees and communication costs. It is increasingly being introduced in railways, factories, and large-scale facilities that require both real-time performance and security.

3. Features of 'mitococa Edge'
- High-precision implementation of congestion detection, intrusion detection, fall detection, loitering detection, people counting, and specific object detection.
- Easy-to-operate settings and confirmation screens displayed in a browser.
- Connects to IP cameras via network, allowing one 'mitococa Edge' unit to simultaneously analyze images from up to five cameras.
- Capable of notifying abnormalities to alarm lights on the same network or via email.
- Connection with EIZO’s IP decoder products allows for simultaneous display of monitoring footage and on-screen abnormality notification.

At the '2nd Railway Technology Exhibition – Osaka' held at Intex Osaka from Wednesday, May 27, to Friday, May 29, 2026, 'mitococa Edge' will be exhibited and demonstrated at the JR West and EIZO booths.
