Starting Saturday, May 23, CIBONE CASE (Ginza) will host the first Tokyo solo exhibition of CALDERA, a woodworking unit based in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture.
Their workshop is located in a corner of a historic shopping district, situated on the former site of a small boutique. Using natural materials collected through their unique sensibility—such as wood offcuts from construction sites and timber with the bark still attached—they continue to create pieces using minimal tools like hand saws and circular saws. They place great importance on the expressions and forms that can only be produced through manual labor.
The picture frames they have focused on in recent years are not limited to standard ready-made sizes. The framed world, acting as a medium between the viewer and the viewed, brings a new sense of meaning and transformation of value to objects. Like choosing furniture, music, or clothing, it expands the possibilities for individuality and expression.
Pricing examples include: - Frame: 33,000 yen - Frame: 36,300 yen - Frame: 27,500 yen - Frame: 35,200 yen
Historically, the existence of a 'frame' was only necessary once there was something to be displayed inside. CALDERA has previously fulfilled custom orders from artists who wanted to frame works of unusual sizes or shapes. Leveraging their experience in creating custom store fixtures and furniture, their designs not only enhance and harmonize with a variety of works but also act as a presence that changes the impression of a space through the frame's own character.
In this exhibition, 40 unique pieces will be presented. The subjects for framing do not need to be famous or expensive; they can range from paintings and photographs to items picked up while traveling, personal mementos, daily tools, or plants.
The 'place for things' created through framing brings a new perspective to familiar or casually collected items. While they are art pieces, they are not self-contained. By framing what you consider important or interesting with your own sensibilities, these works allow the outlines of value and memories buried in daily life to rise to the surface.
<Artist Profile> CALDERA A woodworking unit based in Kobe. They produce frames, furniture, store fixtures, and objects using wood and building materials. The name 'CALDERA' comes from the topography formed by a volcanic collapse. It refers to the process of transition where a new ecosystem forms after an eruption, reflecting their commitment to creating items that capture the essence of natural materials while breaking free from conventional forms.
