■ What is wagaya Connect?

'wagaya Connect', an event hosted by wagaya Japan Co., Ltd., aims to realize an inclusive society where foreign residents and local citizens respect each other and mutually understand one another by creating opportunities for cultural and social exchange necessary for living with peace of mind.

Through 'Experience x Learning x Interaction', we connect foreigners with the community, and in collaboration with local governments and real estate operators, we will continue to develop this into an initiative that symbolizes 'Japan x Foreigners'.

Following the second job-hunting event, the theme for this third edition was disaster prevention.

We conducted an experiential disaster prevention awareness event by visiting the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center with the participants.

■ Event Overview

- Name: wagaya Connect

- Organizer: wagaya Japan Co., Ltd.

- Date: Sunday, April 26

In Japan, a country prone to disasters, providing disaster prevention information to foreign residents and building a cooperative system with the community is an important issue.

When a disaster occurs, Japanese and foreigners are required to overcome language and cultural barriers and act cooperatively in the same evacuation centers. However, differences in language and system understanding are highly likely to cause confusion, making the prior sharing of disaster knowledge and the promotion of mutual understanding during normal times essential for foreigners to safely settle in the community.

To address these issues, we visited the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center this time to undergo disaster prevention experiences, while wagaya Japan employees introduced emergency food accommodating allergies and religious beliefs, and shared information regarding new systems beneficial to foreigners.

■ Learning the 'Reality of Disasters' with Disaster Prevention Experiences at Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center

During the disaster prevention tour at the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center, participants first gained practical knowledge on how to respond in various situations while actually experiencing disaster conditions through earthquake, smoke, and fire extinguishing simulations, and finally watched a disaster prevention video.

In the earthquake experience, participants felt a tremor with a seismic intensity of 7 at the experience corner replicating the shaking of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The monitor in front vividly projected the devastating state of a city during a disaster, and witnessing the severe damage situations made all participants strongly realize the terrifying nature of earthquakes.

Although some had experienced minor earthquakes in Japan, regarding the footage and vibrations of a major earthquake, they mentioned, 'It was my first time experiencing such a massive earthquake, and it was a good opportunity to reaffirm the dangers.'

If a sudden major disaster occurs, there is a possibility of panic driven by such fear and anxiety. It is even more terrifying for foreigners in an unfamiliar land facing language and cultural barriers.

Next, smoke and fire extinguishing experiences were conducted.

The staff explained the properties of smoke, allowing participants to train while properly understanding how to evacuate.

Participants deepened their understanding of Japan's disaster prevention facilities such as emergency exits and fire extinguishers, and they engaged in the practical exercise while enjoying understanding the instruction to shout 'Fire!' to notify surroundings.

Experiencing simulated damage in advance and knowing what happens after an earthquake and what actions to take serves as a highly beneficial experience to act appropriately without panic during an actual disaster.

■ Lectures by wagaya Japan Employees - Including Sharing the New 'Traffic Infraction Notification System'

After various experiences, participants moved to a conference room where our employees introduced emergency foods.

We introduced, cooked, and tasted emergency foods suitable for allergies, as well as halal-compliant emergency foods that are often overlooked in Japanese daily life.

Some halal-compliant foods carry a 'Halal Certification Mark' indicating they are products conforming to Islamic law. By selecting and preparing such emergency foods in advance, Muslims can live while maintaining their faith even during emergencies.

Participants commented, 'Since it is something I am conscious of in my daily life, having a halal certification mark on emergency food provides peace of mind.'
