### Regenerate Tropical Rainforests in Malaysian Borneo: "Orangutan Forest Regeneration Project"

The "Orangutan Forest Regeneration Project" is a project in Malaysian Borneo aiming to plant 100,000 trees in 10 years for the purpose of tropical rainforest regeneration and conservation.

In recent years, the rich tropical rainforests in Borneo have been dwindling due to the expansion of oil palm plantations, and many wild animals are losing their habitats. Orangutans, a symbol of the island, are among the animals affected.

The Nippon Foundation Volunteer Center started this project in February 2024 and has dispatched a total of 130 students to date. A cumulative total of 25,000 trees have been planted locally.

The local program involves tree planting activities in cooperation with local staff, as well as learning about nature, culture, and industry from multiple perspectives through night walks in the rainforest, exchanges with indigenous villages, and visits to orangutan protection facilities.

#### Highlights of this Program

- Full-scale afforestation activities for tropical rainforest regeneration, including not only planting seedlings but also seeding, transportation, digging holes, and post-planting maintenance.
- Tree planting activities by forming a buddy pair with local indigenous staff! Learn about forests and nature from local people.
- Camping in the great nature of the tropical rainforest! Night walk! (Overnight stay in a facility within the tropical rainforest for only one day during the trip).

#### Recommended for

- Those interested in nature conservation and forest regeneration.
- Those who want to challenge international cooperation and overseas volunteering.
- Those who want to grow through experiences they don't usually get.

### Protect the Future of the Ocean in Indonesian Bali: "Let's Preserve the Beautiful Ocean for the Future! ~PIG EGG Project in Bali~ 2026"

Bali Island, Indonesia, known as one of the world's leading resorts. Its beautiful ocean faces various challenges such as environmental impact due to tourism, marine debris, and ecosystem conservation.

In this program, participants will visit local organizations working on ocean conservation and environmental problem-solving, see the issues with their own eyes, and participate in actual activities. Through sea turtle protection activities and mangrove forest cleanups, participants will learn about the connection between the ocean and people.

Furthermore, this program is a long-term program of approximately 5 months that does not end with just the local trip.

Before and after the trip, opportunities for domestic activities and learning are provided, and participants will deepen their thoughts with each other and give shape to actions they can take.

Participants will also play a role in disseminating their local experiences and insights through short videos, conveying the challenges and attractions of the ocean to society.

#### What is the PIG EGG Project?

Young people who take action for the ocean and the environment are called "PIG EGGs." Breaking out of their shell, taking a step forward, and eventually becoming a presence that spreads positive influence to those around them—. This is a project developed by the Nippon Foundation Volunteer Center and NPO Umi-Sakura for students.
