■ 98.5% of people who 'have not reused in the past year' unconsciously utilize reuse out of necessity

As the transition to a circular economy, which circulates resources and products to maximize value, progresses domestically and internationally, reuse—repeatedly using items without changing their form—is an action driven by consumers' necessity, born from the sentiment that throwing away unused items is wasteful, and it connects directly to the circular economy. The domestic reuse market is projected to reach a scale of approximately 3.3 trillion yen in 2024 and 4 trillion yen by 2030 (*1). On the other hand, the percentage of consumers who have experienced reuse in both purchasing and selling/handing over in the past year is decreasing to around 30%. The Ministry of the Environment aims to expand the base of reuse and make it a norm, announcing a goal to increase the percentage of experienced users to 35.3% for purchasing reused goods and 36.8% for selling/handing over unused products by 2030 (*2).

As the leading company in reuse, the BOOKOFF Group, co-chairing the 2026 'August 8 Reuse Day' Executive Committee, is working through its business to make reuse more accessible to consumers in order to promote the entire industry. According to a survey targeting BOOKOFF official app members to understand the gap in customers' perceptions of reuse, it was revealed that 98.5% of those who answered 'have not experienced reuse in the past year' had actually used BOOKOFF for either selling or purchasing in the most recent year, unconsciously taking reuse actions. Based on these results, we aim to use Reuse Day as a catalyst to instill the recognition that various companies' services are indeed 'reuse', helping consumers realize that their unconscious daily actions are smart choices leading to a circular economy, thereby making reuse a natural part of consumer behavior.

◾️Significance of hosting the reuse experience event 'August 8 Reuse Day ~Connecting Smiles to the Power of the Future.~'

'Reuse Day' is a commemorative day applied for and established by the Japan Reuse Affairs Association in 2023, with the aim of having more people learn about the goodness and fun of reuse and engage in it. August 8th originates from the alignment of the number '8', which shares the same shape as '∞' (infinity), representing the continuous circulation of items from person to person.

To deepen the understanding of reuse while transforming negative images into positive ones, and to prompt behavioral change sparked by Reuse Day, we will hold a reuse experience event over two days on Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8, 2026, with the backing of the Ministry of the Environment and METI, alongside 31 endorsing companies.

This event is primarily aimed at 5th and 6th-grade elementary school students and their parents, who learn about sustainable living in school. By experiencing reuse, which they have acquired as knowledge through classes, in a workshop setting, we will create opportunities for them to incorporate it into their daily lives and act by seeing the circular society as their own personal matter.
