URBAN RESEARCH KYOTO, the flagship store of URBAN RESEARCH, will host a solo exhibition "ROAST BEEF" by contemporary artist Haruto Tsuda, who is attracting attention with his unique style, from Friday, May 29, 2026, to Sunday, June 7, 2026.
STATEMENT
I embarked on a two-month road trip across America with someone else. Being with another person for such a long time made the objective self that the other person perceived merge into my subjectivity, leading to a continuous confrontation with my original self even after returning to Japan. Exhausted by this long confrontation (BEEF) that already felt burnt (ROAST), I decided to depict this confrontation as an artwork and disperse the heat by entrusting the outcome to the viewers. Furthermore, while I usually depict others from my own perspective, this exhibition is also a new attempt to invert that viewpoint.
How am I seen? Behind actions that I assume are natural, another me is concerned about it. The self as a subject, and the self that emerges through the gaze of others. Both exist for certain, yet they never completely overlap. —That slight discrepancy continued to linger within him even after returning home.
Until now, Tsuda has depicted others from his own perspective. In this exhibition, he inverts that viewpoint, exploring the contours of the self anew, starting from "the self that is seen."
Works created with Haruto Tsuda's distinctive use of color and free lines will line the walls of URBAN RESEARCH KYOTO.
In addition to the exhibition and sale of artworks, this exhibition will also feature limited-edition items that allow you to incorporate its worldview into your daily life.
Exclusive collaboration items, such as hand towels and caps, created in collaboration with buyer Koyama, with whom Tsuda has a personal friendship, will be available. This lineup is easy to incorporate into the upcoming season, allowing you to feel the charm of the works more intimately.
Furthermore, on the opening day, Friday, May 29, a reception will be held, open to anyone who wishes to participate. You can enjoy free drinks, and visitors will receive a limited-edition can badge on a first-come, first-served basis.
For 10 days, you can directly experience what artist Haruto Tsuda feels and depicts at this very moment. We sincerely look forward to your visit.
