Naruse Memorial Hall of Japan Women's University to Hold Special Exhibition "Classes of Japan Women's University - Faculty of Science" Starting April 10 (Fri)

The Naruse Memorial Hall, an affiliated institution of Japan Women's University (Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo; President: Ryoko Imaichi), will hold the special exhibition "Classes of Japan Women's University - Faculty of Science" starting April 10 (Fri).

In 1901 (Meiji 34), Japan Women's University was founded with three faculties: Home Economics, Japanese Literature, and English Literature. From the outset, the establishment of an Education Faculty focused on natural science education was considered, and five years after its opening, the Faculty of Education was born. However, at that time, natural science education for women seemed to be premature, and the Faculty of Education was merged into the Faculty of Home Economics, with natural science subjects being carried over as foundational courses.

Subsequently, with the establishment of the new university system in 1948 (Showa 23), the Department of Home Economics and Science was established within the Faculty of Home Economics. Further responding to calls for a new Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Science was established in 1992 (Heisei 4) with the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and the Department of Materials and Biological Sciences. In 2022 (Reiwa 4), the department names were changed to the Department of Mathematical and Data Sciences and the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences, and to this day, it has produced many graduates.

This exhibition will introduce the 125-year journey of our university's natural science education and classes from its founding period, along with a display of some recently donated materials. We hope you will visit us when you come to our university.

■ Simultaneously on Display: 2025 Fiscal Year Collection Materials
From Yuko Sekiguchi, a textile artist who held the "Series 'Creating' (7) Yuko Sekiguchi Textile Art Exhibition" at Naruse Memorial Hall in 2015 (Heisei 27), two new works have been donated. "Waiting for Spring," created in 1999, is a work characterized by the memorable fukinotou (Japanese butterbur sprout) depicted in the upper right, announcing the arrival of spring. "Prayer," created in 2010, uses Sekiguchi's representative dyeing technique "imoban" and was inspired by mosaic art seen in Sicily.

In addition to the two works mentioned above, previously donated pieces will also be exhibited this time.
