Universal Music LLC (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Naotaka Fujikura) will release Paul McCartney's new album, 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane,' on Friday, May 29.
Paul McCartney will release his 18th solo album, 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane.' The domestic LP version (imported disc specifications / limited production) will be released on Wednesday, June 10, in three types with an obi strip and commentary: the standard edition, an Amazon.co.jp exclusive white LP, and a Tower Records exclusive red LP.
This album is his first new work in five and a half years since 'McCartney III' (2020) and features songs about precious, never-before-told memories and newly written love songs. It is the most introspective album of his career, telling his own story by looking back on his formative years that shaped his life and the foundations of modern popular culture, including his childhood in post-war Liverpool, his parents' resilience, and his adventures with George Harrison and John Lennon long before Beatlemania.
The album's production began five years ago when Paul started exchanging ideas with producer Andrew Watt over tea. Due to Paul's busy schedule, the album was recorded in tight, efficient sessions over five years, traveling between Los Angeles and Sussex in the gaps between world tours. With no pressure or deadlines from a record label, the two were able to complete the album to their satisfaction on their own timeline.
The collage image used for the artwork of all physical formats was created from over 100 images, including unpublished photos from Paul's personal archive, and features images of a young Paul, John, George, and Ringo.
The track 'Home To Us' is a duet with fellow Beatles member Ringo Starr, with Chrissie Hynde and Sharleen Spiteri on backing vocals. The song was unveiled by Paul at a special fan album listening event held at Abbey Road Studios in London on May 5. Paul himself appeared before the 50 lucky fans invited for an exclusive preview of the new album, sharing stories about the new songs and the recording process. The track was created based on a drum track that Paul, along with producer Andrew Watt, had asked Ringo to record, making it the only song on the album to feature a guest drummer. Paul plays most of the instruments on the album himself, a practice reminiscent of the spirit of his 1970 solo debut, 'McCartney I.'
The initial production run of the domestic editions (CD, LP) will include a 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane Album Jacket Card (U-CONNECT Card)' (size 86x54mm) as a bonus. The U-CONNECT card is a service that allows users to access various benefits such as prize giveaways, music, and videos by accessing the QR code printed on the card with a smartphone, mobile phone, or tablet. Each QR code has a unique ID, so only the owner can apply for individual promotions. In addition to the release-time benefits, cardholders can participate in any additional promotions for card owners that are decided upon after the release.
The first promotion is a lottery for 30 people to win a tenugui (Japanese hand towel) printed with the album artwork's collage image. The collage was created from over 100 images, including unpublished photos from Paul's personal archive, featuring young Paul, John, George, and Ringo, and is a limited-edition, not-for-sale item. Additional promotions for cardholders are planned after the album's release.
Paul McCartney has released a special conversation video, 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane: In Conversation with Paul McCartney & Paul Mescal,' on Amazon Live with actor Paul Mescal. In the interview, they discuss the background of the songwriting and memories of Paul's parents and early companions like John Lennon and George Harrison, focusing on new tracks such as 'Down South,' 'Home To Us,' 'Lost Horizon,' 'Salesman Saint,' and 'Days We Left Behind.'
Mescal is an Irish actor who has been announced to play Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes's four-part Beatles film series, scheduled for release in April 2028.
