◆ About the Nishi Amane Award

Nishi Amane (1829-1897), who was active from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period, was born in Tsuwano Town. He contributed to the reception of Western studies in Japan, including philosophy and international law, and had a great impact on Japan's academic world.

In honor of Nishi Amane's outstanding achievements, Tsuwano Town established the "Nishi Amane Award" in 2018, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration. This award aims to foster and support young researchers, inheriting and developing his intellectual tradition. This award is part of a related project of the "Agreement on Cooperation for Nishi Amane Research" concluded between Shimane Prefectural University and Tsuwano Town on December 2, 2017. It will be held in two phases, with the first phase running until 2022 and the second phase from 2023 to 2027, in parallel with the new complete works compilation project under the same agreement.

The awards ceremony and prize money presentation will take place at the "Nishi Amane Symposium" held annually in Tsuwano Town. At that time, awardees will be asked to give a lecture on their research. The Nishi Amane Symposium is intended for residents within and near the town, and we hope you will view it as an opportunity to widely present your research findings to the general public.
