The dynamic animation and fresh story captured the hearts of many viewers. When it was released in July 2006, it started with only 6 theaters, but the number of screening theaters gradually expanded nationwide through word of mouth. Ultimately, it expanded to over 100 theaters in total and recorded a long run of about 40 weeks. Furthermore, it is a monumental work that made director Mamoru Hosoda's name known to the world, receiving numerous international accolades including awards at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
