TSP Taiyo Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Meguro-ku, Tokyo; President: Kago Ikezawa; hereinafter “the Company”) will inherit building materials from the Ireland Pavilion and the ORA Food Pavilion “Utage” at the Osaka-Kansai Expo and reconstruct them as the main gate and restaurant for the 2027 International Horticultural Exhibition (GREEN×EXPO 2027).

The Company was responsible for design procedures and construction of the entire Ireland Pavilion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo based on the design by the Irish government's Office of Public Works. In response to Ireland's request to reuse wood as much as possible, the Company proposed repurposing it for the main gate of GREEN×EXPO 2027.

Furthermore, building materials used in the ORA Food Pavilion “Utage,” for which the Company handled architectural and exterior construction design and construction (excluding exhibition and facade work), will also be reused in GREEN×EXPO 2027 pavilions. This reduces waste and preserves the valuable legacy of the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Inherited Vision from Osaka-Kansai Expo to GREEN×EXPO 2027

The main gate, spanning approximately 92 meters in total length, combines wood and steel frame members. Its exterior reuses about 1,000 louver* shaped wood pieces made of Irish red pine, originally used on the exterior of the Ireland Pavilion.

The lengths and angles of the wood are deliberately arranged randomly to create a design that conveys the warmth of wood. The Company handled basic and detailed design, receiving advice from Kengo Kuma, the master architect of the exhibition. The architecture allows light and wind to pass through gaps in the wood, expressing a sustainable future befitting GREEN×EXPO 2027. It goes beyond mere reuse, achieving both architectural beauty and environmental consideration.

The wood used in the Ireland Pavilion is reused with minimal alteration to its original form. As the main gate that first welcomes visitors, it plays a symbolic role.

* Building material made by arranging elongated slats in parallel at regular intervals.

The restaurant, for which the Company is responsible for design, construction, and exterior decoration, reuses building materials from both the Ireland Pavilion and the ORA Food Pavilion “Utage.” Part of the exterior wall reuses wood from the Ireland Pavilion. The entire building is designed using the same structural form as the ORA Food Pavilion, and by reusing the “TM Truss” building material from the second-floor ceiling, a seamless large space without pillars is realized on a single story.

The Company's Initiatives at GREEN×EXPO 2027

The Company is involved in the construction of multiple pavilions at GREEN×EXPO 2027, promoting the reuse of building materials and space creation incorporating the “GREEN Circular Architecture” concept. It is also certified as a “GX House Supplier” for reuse-type building agency services. Additionally, the Company independently developed “FLEXPANUS,” a wooden modular unit that is almost 100% reusable, for GREEN×EXPO 2027. Construction of nine units is planned, to be used for various purposes such as official shops and cafes operated by the association.

As a certified business under the Yokohama City SDGs Certification System, the Company actively promotes initiatives to achieve the SDGs and will continue to contribute to the sustainable hosting of GREEN×EXPO 2027.
