Toyo Seikan Group Partners with Perovio and TNO to Accelerate Global Deployment of Flexible Perovskite Solar Panels

Toyo Seikan Group Holdings announced that it has agreed to establish a strategic partnership with Perovio Technologies B.V. of the Netherlands and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, TNO, covering both technology and business development. The partnership aims to create a global market for flexible perovskite solar power panels. Since 2025, Toyo Seikan Group has worked with TNO as a technology development partner, focusing on mass customization for integrated solar power systems in Europe through its functional materials brand for electronic devices, MinaNeo. By adding Perovio, a TNO spin-out that inherits the perovskite solar cell manufacturing technology developed by TNO, the three parties will further accelerate business development in the perovskite solar cell field. Demand has been growing for flexible solar panels that are lightweight, adaptable, and customizable, driven by roof load limits, increasingly diverse installation surfaces, and the need for lightweight panels that are less likely to break during disasters. Perovskite solar cells, in particular, are attracting global attention as next-generation solar cells nearing social implementation, thanks to recent improvements in power generation efficiency. Toyo Seikan Group is actively pursuing technology development and commercialization in the perovskite solar cell field through MinaNeo, as interest and market growth are expected worldwide. Since 2025, the company has collaborated with TNO on mass production initiatives in Europe for next-generation flexible solar panels, including cost-effective perovskite solar cells. MinaNeo products, including front sheets, back sheets, and edge sealing materials, are being optimized for TNO’s R-to-R roll-to-roll assembly manufacturing line to support mass customization. Perovio was established in March 2026 as a TNO spin-out company inheriting TNO’s perovskite cell manufacturing technology. Through Perovio’s manufacturing and supply capabilities and Toyo Seikan Group’s module integration using MinaNeo products, the partners aim to enhance practical deployability, establish a stable supply system, and expand the supply chain network. Under the partnership, Toyo Seikan Group will integrate MinaNeo products that protect flexible solar panels and develop strategies for the social implementation of perovskite solar cells. Perovio will manufacture and supply perovskite cells. TNO will support product development by Toyo Seikan Group and Perovio as the main R&D partner. Going forward, the three parties will gradually expand demonstration testing of perovskite solar cells using Perovio cells. By combining their strengths in technology, manufacturing, and business development, they aim to quickly establish mass production and stable supply systems based on knowledge gained from demonstrations. In Japan, Toyo Seikan Group will communicate the product value through demonstrations and connect this to social implementation in global markets, including Europe.
