Rakuten Group, Inc. (hereinafter "Rakuten") and Rakuten Edy, Inc. (hereinafter "Rakuten Edy") announce that the general term displayed for the balance of the e-money "Rakuten Cash," operated by Rakuten Edy, will be gradually changed to "Rakuten Pay Balance" (Note 1) across various Rakuten Group services. Starting Monday, May 18th (scheduled), the balance display within the "Rakuten Pay" app will switch to the new general term, and will subsequently be changed across other Rakuten Group services such as "Rakuten Ichiba" and "Rakuma." Please note that this change does not affect the names of the e-money "Rakuten Cash [Basic Type]," "Rakuten Cash [Premium Type]," "Rakuten Cash [Premium Type] (Salary)," nor the terms of service.
Rakuten launched "Rakuten Cash" as an online e-money service in February 2008. It can be used across various Rakuten Group services such as "Rakuten Ichiba," "Rakuten Travel," "Rakuten Mobile," and for investment trust accumulation at "Rakuten Securities," as well as at "Rakuten Pay" and "Rakuten Point Card" member stores, and even for paying national and local taxes and public utility fees. Furthermore, it has provided highly convenient functions such as sending and receiving money for allowances, remittances, and expense reimbursements, as well as billing functions.
As Japan's cashless payment ratio continues to rise steadily (Note 2), by changing the display on Rakuten Group services to the new general term, Rakuten aims to clarify that "Rakuten Pay Balance" is a payment infrastructure usable in diverse scenarios both within and outside the group, providing users with a more intuitive and convenient service experience, and enhancing brand recognition.
Even after the general term changes to "Rakuten Pay Balance," there will be no changes to the functions, services, or usage methods of "Rakuten Cash." All functions can be used as before.
Rakuten and Rakuten Edy will continue to improve their services to provide users with an even more convenient payment experience.
(Note 1) "Rakuten Pay Balance" is the general term and total amount for "Rakuten Cash [Basic Type]," "Rakuten Cash [Premium Type]," and "Rakuten Cash [Premium Type] (Salary)."
