Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Tatsuyoshi Nakamura) announces that on March 19, 2026, jointly with Eigashima Fisheries Cooperative and the NPO Amamo Seed Bank, it received the 'J Blue Credit Issuance Certificate' certified by the Japan Blue Economy Technology Research Association (JBE).

The 'J Blue Credit' is a new carbon credit established by JBE following the effectuation of the Paris Agreement, aiming to accelerate efforts toward climate change mitigation and adaptation in coastal and marine areas, and recognizing the role of blue carbon ecosystems as CO2 sinks.

The project subject to the J Blue Credit this time is the "Eelgrass Bed Creation 'Eelgrass is the Cradle of the Sea!' Project centered around Eigashima*1, Akashi City," which has been continuously ongoing since the eelgrass bed creation demonstration experiment conducted in November 2001.

This marks the fourth consecutive year since FY2022 that the J Blue Credit issuance certificate has been received for the initiatives in Eigashima. With each passing year, efforts have been made to expand the eelgrass bed investigation and evaluation technologies necessary for J Blue Credit applications. On the other hand, the certified amount for this fiscal year decreased significantly compared to the previous year due to the rapid decline of the local eelgrass beds since last summer. Moving forward, the company plans to focus on investigating the causes of this decline while advancing activities aimed at the early recovery of the eelgrass beds.

Our company, which has consistently been involved with the sea as a marine contractor since our founding, regards the "realization of a carbon-neutral society" as a materiality (key issue). We will continue to create and conserve eelgrass beds in collaboration with local communities, striving to generate blue carbon in the marine environment.

FY2022 J Blue Credit Issuance: 6.4t-CO2
FY2023 J Blue Credit Issuance: 4.5t-CO2
FY2024 J Blue Credit Issuance: 17.3t-CO2
FY2025 J Blue Credit Issuance: 6.0t-CO2

*1 The notations "Eijima" and "Eigashima" are officially mixed.
*2 Eelgrass is a type of seagrass that grows in shallow waters. Known as the "cradle of the sea," it plays an important role in the marine ecosystem as a habitat and spawning ground for fish and other marine life. Additionally, because it absorbs CO2 through photosynthesis, it is called blue carbon and its function as a sink is drawing attention.
Eelgrass previously inhabited areas all over the country, but its habitats have significantly decreased due to coastal development and reclamation during the period of rapid economic growth, water quality deterioration, and rising sea temperatures associated with recent climate change.
