TOUFU TOKYO is holding a pop-up for its upcycled bonsai art "RE BONSAITM" for one week from July 8 (Wed) to July 14 (Tue) at Hankyu Men's Tokyo in Yurakucho, Tokyo. First, "RE BONSAITM" is a unique upcycled bonsai by TOUFU TOKYO artist Yoshio Suzuki, which breathes new life into withered bonsai trees or those that have reached the end of their lifespan and would normally be discarded, reconstructing them as contemporary art. While using real plants for the wood, branches, roots, leaves, and moss, it requires no care such as watering or pruning. It is a shift from "bonsai to grow" to "bonsai that exists." The name "RE BONSAITM" is a coined word combining "REBORN" and "BONSAI," embodying the concept of the cycle of life and a reinterpretation of Japanese culture. This 5th pop-up at Hankyu Men's Tokyo, coinciding with the growing global support for "RE BONSAITM" across industries, will expand its venue to Hankyu Men's Tokyo 1F POP-UP SPACE A & B. In addition to the limited exhibition and sale of 30 "RE BONSAITM" stands and frame works, it will also feature a workshop to create original "RE BONSAITM," sales of TOUFU TOKYO brand apparel and merchandise, and special custom orders (commissions). Experience the upcycled bonsai art recognized by the times through this hands-on opportunity where you can see, touch, and even DIY. "RE BONSAITM" requires no maintenance and will not wither indoors, allowing you to incorporate it into your lifestyle.

It redefines traditional bonsai from "something to grow" into "sustainable art pieces that can be enjoyed in any space" as "RE BONSAITM (RE盆栽)" and handles numerous projects that globally disseminate highly innovative Japanese culture.

TOUFU TOKYO Artist Yoshio Suzuki

Born in 1978 in Nishi-Kasai, Tokyo. An artist of "RE BONSAITM" who breathes unique new life into withered bonsai. In 2021, he launched "RE BONSAITM," which embodies the pride of upcycling while paying homage to majestic sculptural beauty and quiet dignity. The theme is "life and death, accumulation of time." He is actively engaged in various activities, including participation in the Disney© 100th Anniversary and Tokyo Disney Resort 40th Anniversary commemorative projects, invitations to the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Japan held at the UNESCO World Heritage site Nijo Castle in Kyoto, media appearances, live performances, and workshops.

What is RE BONSAITM (RE盆栽)

A coined word from Reborn and Bonsai. As an art form that breathes new life into bonsai that have completed their role, withered original trees are carefully selected, and branches and leaves that have undergone a unique drying process are attached and reconstructed. The spirit of innovation and challenge is imbued into the original bonsai, creating a new worldview for bonsai. All works utilize real plants, and the dynamic twists and cracks of the trunk, which have marked time, remain as they are in the raw wood (shiraki). The newly added foliage creates a crisp modernism, shaping it into an interior object that elevates the formality of a space. No maintenance such as watering, sunlight, shade, or pruning is required. Since it does not use soil, it does not fall under quarantine laws and can be taken overseas. It can be viewed semi-permanently even indoors where natural light does not reach.
