Men's bathing area concept: Wall features tile art by KYNE, inspired by poppies
[Key Points of This Release]
· For the first time, the full spatial design of the 'Experience the Tree Sauna'—crafted entirely from one massive Western Red Cedar log—is revealed.
· Sauna production is led by TTNE's 'Totonoe Oyakata' (Dai Matsuo), interior design supervision by LINE-INC., and bath area artwork by Fukuoka-born artist KYNE.
· To manage congestion, a limited-time reservation system will be implemented for the first 10 days of operation, from August 7 to August 16. Entry will be capped to ensure each guest can fully immerse in the 'experience the tree' journey. Reservations open July 7.
● Interior Space Concepts
We introduce five defining elements of TOTOPA Hakata Ekimae and the spatial concepts of each area.
Experience the Tree Sauna: A single large-diameter Western Red Cedar log is used to its fullest. The trunk becomes the sauna room's centerpiece, the heartwood is crafted into solid-wood benches and ceiling art, and the sapwood and offcuts are used in wall designs and fixtures. Every part of the tree breathes life into the space.
Tajihi Tile Bathrooms: Bathtubs in both men's and women's areas are fully lined with tiles from Tajihi, Gifu Prefecture. Their earthy texture and softly rounded shapes harmonize with the wood, creating a gentle, relaxing atmosphere.
KYNE's Tile Art: Tile artworks featuring poppies, specially designed by Fukuoka-born artist KYNE for this facility, are installed on the walls of both men's and women's bathing areas. The flowers emerging through the steam add vibrant color to the space.
Lounge & Drinks: For the first time in the TOTOPA brand, a lounge offering drinks and light snacks is introduced in the men's area, promoting a stay-and-relax post-bath experience. Complimentary drinks, as offered at TOTOPA Toshidate Meiji Koen, are also available.
Enhanced Women's Sauna: A rare, high-quality sauna facility for women in Fukuoka City. The women's area matches the men's in quality and attention to detail, featuring a sauna room with solid Western Red Cedar planks and a bathing area adorned with KYNE's tile art, delivering an authentic 'experience the tree sauna' for all genders.
[Men's Area]
Men's Sauna Room: The centerpiece is the trunk of the massive cedar log placed at the center of the room, symbolizing the 'Experience the Tree Sauna.' Even the stove is wrapped in bark, embodying the entire tree.
Men's Sauna Entrance: Original wooden sauna mats line the arched entrance, heightening anticipation for the sauna experience.
Men's Bathing Area: Transition from a bright, open changing room to a dimly lit bathing space, creating immersion and separation from daily life.
Men's Bathing Area: Rounded bathtubs and stair-like Tajihi tile designs balance comfort and openness. KYNE's poppy tile art adorns the walls.
Men's Changing Room: A space greeted by a solid Western Red Cedar plank art piece, with an integrated lounge offering drinks and light snacks.
[Women's Area]
Women's Bathing Area: KYNE's poppy-themed tile art adds color to a space wrapped in Tajihi tiles and soft lighting. A spacious tub offers a relaxing soak for body and mind.
Women's Sauna Room: Solid Western Red Cedar planks are used for benches and ceiling art, enveloping the space in natural wood grain.

'As you explore saunas, you inevitably arrive at the world of wood. Among them, Western Red Cedar holds a special place for me. If asked, “What sauna would you want to enter at the end of your life?” I would instantly answer: a Western Red Cedar sauna. Its pinkish wood grain and faintly sweet, wine-like aroma reminiscent of wooden barrels—I affectionately call it the “Queen of Saunas” in my heart.
The log we used is from Alaska, aged 800 to 1,000 years, with a trunk diameter of 1.37 meters. We used every single part of this one tree. There may be no more luxurious sauna like this anywhere in the world.
With the intention of creating a sauna that could last for centuries… I ended up building my own “sauna I’d want to enter at the end of my life.”
I wonder how magnificent the forest was where such a tree once grew.
I hope visitors will fully experience the tree with their entire body and imagine the Alaskan forest.'

'At TOTOPA Hakata Ekimae, we centered the design around the 'Experience the Tree Sauna,' using one Western Red Cedar log to its fullest. We expressed the physical contrasts inherent in saunas—light and dark, warmth and coolness, openness and intimacy—throughout the entire space.
