MySelect Kimono Rental (operated by LIN Co., Ltd. / Kani City, Gifu Prefecture) conducted a survey of 100 parents aged 30s to 50s about difficulties they've experienced when selecting kimonos.

The results revealed:

1st place: Choosing colors and patterns — 48.0%

2nd place: Coordinating the outfit — 28.0%

3rd place: Size — 18.0%

This indicates that more parents are struggling with "which kimono to choose" rather than concerns about sizing.

In recent years, as the variety of rental kimonos has greatly expanded, options have increased, but more parents report feeling uncertain about which kimono would best suit their child.

Survey Results | Kimono Selection Challenges Ranking

1st Place: Choosing colors and patterns

3rd Place: Size

Nearly one in two parents struggle with choosing colors and patterns

The most common response in this survey was difficulty selecting colors and patterns.

For ceremonial kimonos worn at events such as Omiyamairi (a Shinto shrine visit for newborns) and Shichi-Go-San (a rite of passage for children aged seven, five, and three), there is now a wide variety of designs available, including:

・Traditional patterns

・Modern patterns

・Muted colors

・Natural tones

Because of this abundance of choice, many parents expressed concerns such as:

"I don't know which one would look best"

"I want to choose a color that will look good in family photos"

"I'm also curious about current trends"

Coordination concerns also rank high

28.0% of respondents reported difficulties with coordinating the overall look.

For Shichi-Go-San in particular, parents must consider:

・Balancing outfits among siblings

・Matching the mother's attire

・How everyone will appear together in family photos with grandparents

This suggests an increasing awareness among parents of the overall family atmosphere when selecting kimonos, rather than focusing solely on the individual garment.

Surprisingly few concerns about sizing

Only 18.0% of respondents mentioned sizing as a concern.

In recent years, rental kimono services have expanded their size offerings, making it easier to find garments suited to a child's height and build.

As a result, this survey shows that parents' concerns have shifted from "whether it will fit" to "which one to choose."

Insights from professionals

At MySelect Kimono Rental, most customer inquiries are not about sizing, but rather focus on questions such as:

"Which colors are most popular?"

"I'm torn between this kimono and that one."

"Which one will look better in photos?"

These reflect how central color and pattern selection has become. We recognize that kimono selection is no longer just about choosing a garment—it's an integral part of creating lasting family memories.
