Tokyu Resort Town Tateshina (Chino City, Nagano Prefecture; General Manager: Hiroya Sasamoto) has donated a set of paddles and specialized balls for "pickleball," a new sport gaining buzz nationwide, to all public elementary schools in Chino City, in order to support the sound development of children's minds and bodies in the region.

In recent years, along with the spread of digital devices reducing opportunities for physical activity, children's lack of exercise and decline in physical fitness have become issues, exacerbated by restrictions on outdoor play due to heatwaves. Through this initiative, we aim to support the healthy growth of children in the community by creating opportunities to enjoy physical activity indoors, regardless of the weather.

■ Creating "Joy of Movement" for Children Together with the Community

The spread of smartphones and game consoles, combined with recent record-breaking heatwaves limiting outdoor activities, has led to a decrease in opportunities for children to engage in physical play. Exercise during developmental years is crucial not only for physical aspects like muscle and bone development but also for fostering sound minds and bodies through improved social skills and emotional stability gained through interaction. Therefore, to create a safe and accessible environment for children to be physically active indoors, Tokyu Resort Town Tateshina has donated a complete set of equipment for "pickleball," a popular new sport with a rapidly growing player base worldwide, to all public elementary schools within Chino City. We aim to continue supporting the healthy growth of the next generation by collaborating with the community on initiatives like this.

This donation is being implemented against the backdrop of efforts by Tokyu Resort Town Tateshina to establish dedicated pickleball courts and create an environment where pickleball can be experienced daily. In addition to setting up dedicated courts, this donation was made with the desire to create broader opportunities for sports enjoyment for both local residents and facility users.

■ About "Pickleball," a Sport with a Growing Global Player Base

Pickleball, which combines elements of table tennis, tennis, and badminton, is experiencing an explosive boom in the United States. With its wide paddles and light balls, even children who are not athletic can enjoy rallies from the first day and engage in physical activity. It can be introduced into physical education classes and recreational activities in gymnasiums without special construction, utilizing existing badminton court poles and nets. Tokyu Resort Town Tateshina is working with the Pickleball Association to convey the fun of pickleball.

The paddles being donated this time feature original designs with motifs of "Sky, Rainbow, Stars" to stimulate children's curiosity and encourage them to use the equipment with affection. The vast sky symbolizes children's "infinite potential," the colorful rainbow represents "respect for individuality," and the stars shining in the night sky symbolize "future goals." We hope that by holding these paddles, children will develop a bright and forward-looking mindset and walk their path with strength.
