Highest Ratio Among Major Private Railways! Approx. 30% of Tokyu Railways' Operating Power to be 'Additional' Renewable Energy via Corporate PPA

Tokyu Railways announced it will procure renewable energy from newly developed solar power plants (approx. 98MW) via Corporate PPA for 25 years starting in 2026. By 2028, 30% of its operating power will come from sources with 'additionality.'

Tokyu Railways Co., Ltd. (hereinafter 'Tokyu Railways') will utilize a Corporate PPA to procure renewable energy-derived power and environmental value with 'additionality' for 25 years starting from fiscal 2026. This energy will come from approximately 98MW-DC of solar power plants to be newly developed across Japan by several power generation limited liability companies (SPCs) invested in by Tokyu Corporation and others. The procured power will be used for parts of the operations on the Toyoko, Meguro, Tokyu Shin-yokohama, Den-en-toshi, Oimachi, Ikegami, and Kodomonokuni Lines.

The solar power plants developed by the SPCs will begin operation and supply sequentially from April 2026 to the end of fiscal 2027. Through this initiative, approximately 30% (approx. 110 million kWh/year) of the total 370 million kWh/year required for Tokyu Line operations will be power with environmental value that directly contributes to the increase of new renewable energy facilities (additionality) via Corporate PPA by fiscal 2028. This represents the highest adoption ratio among major private railways in Japan.

Since April 2022, Tokyu Railways has already been operating all its lines using 100% renewable energy through menus provided by retail electricity providers. By adding this new initiative, the company aims to confront environmental issues more deeply as a large-scale power consumer, contribute to the creation of new renewable energy sources, and further enhance its role in supporting the power infrastructure.

In this project, Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc., which has expertise in power procurement and supply-demand operations, and Tokyu Power Supply Co., Ltd., which provides community-based electricity services mainly along Tokyu lines, will jointly provide the electricity supply.

Moving forward, the Tokyu Group and Tohoku Electric Power will seek further cooperation to promote the spread of additional renewable energy through the development of solar power (energy creation) and the use of storage batteries (energy storage) via off-site corporate PPAs, contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society.

[Overview of the Initiative]
Tokyu is promoting solar power plant development in collaboration with various partner companies as an 'energy creation' effort, aiming to stabilize renewable energy procurement for the Tokyu Group. This initiative is realized by Tohoku Electric Power and Tokyu Power Supply working together to provide Tokyu Railways with power and environmental value derived from solar power plants developed by the SPC invested in by Tokyu and others using an off-site corporate PPA scheme.
