Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Taito-ku, Tokyo; President: Akihiro Kosaka; hereinafter "Tokyo Metro") will, starting Monday, March 30, 2026, introduce displays at five stations—Minowa and Iriya stations on the Hibiya Line, and Minami-sunamachi, Kasai, and Urayasu stations on the Tozai Line—to show real-time, car-by-car congestion levels. These stations are located within the congested sections of the Hibiya Line (bound for Nakameguro) and the Tozai Line (bound for Nakano), and the initiative is intended to promote the leveling of passenger congestion.
Based on real-time measurements taken by depth cameras and AI, the displays will show the "actual congestion of arriving trains" and "congestion forecasts for each station after boarding." Because passengers can check these forecasts and actual conditions immediately before boarding, those using the Hibiya Line (bound for Nakameguro) and the Tozai Line (bound for Nakano) during the morning rush hour, in particular, will be able to choose the most optimal car or train based on the current situation.
This initiative follows successful demonstration experiments conducted at Waseda Station on the Tozai Line in fiscal year 2022 and Aoyama-itchome Station on the Hanzomon Line in fiscal year 2023, which confirmed that providing real-time congestion information has a measurable effect in encouraging passengers to move to less crowded cars.
Tokyo Metro is the only railway operator to implement a train congestion measurement system using depth cameras and AI. The data is used to provide congestion information via the "Tokyo Metro my!" app and as foundational data for schedule planning. In September 2022, this system received a Special Award at the 21st Japan Railway Awards.
Moving forward, Tokyo Metro will continue to advance initiatives to level out congestion so that customers can use the subway with greater peace of mind and comfort.
